First look at next MacBook Air shows new design, colors & more

The leak: Apple’s next MacBook Air will feature an all-new design and more, according to Jon Prosser (77.6% accurate).

    • The new design is not tapered, but rather completely flat and nearly as thin as the USB-C port on the side
    • Prosser mentions that the exact sizing of the display is a guess, but the bezels on this prototype are white
    • An updated keyboard features full-size function row keys and the same Touch ID sensor as the new iMac keyboards
    • The rubber feet on the bottom of the MacBook Air have been swapped for two long rubber bars

Our take: I think this design looks phenomenal, and it seriously seems like this is as thin as they can go. We’ve seen a lot of Apple’s new base silicon designs, but I’m still most excited to see the next M-series of Pro models…

  • Apple ‘M2’ processor reportedly begins production ahead of next MacBook release

Apple ‘M2’ processor reportedly begins production ahead of next MacBook release

The rumor: Apple’s first major upgrade to their own silicon has started production, according to Nikkei Asia (rating pending).

    • The new tentatively named M2 chip may be ready to ship by July, meaning it will likely power the new MacBook models set to launch in the second half of the year
    • “Sources said it will eventually be used in other Mac and Apple devices beyond the MacBook” Nikkei notes

Our take: Two big takeaways in the story for me: 1) Apple may jump to M2 before something like M1X or M1Z and 2) that we likely aren’t getting new MacBook models ahead of the Fall.

  • Apple’s future M-series chips may have up to 32-cores, improved graphics

Apple’s future M-series chips may have up to 32-cores, improved graphics

The rumor: Future versions of Apple’s wildly powerful M-series chips are coming throughout 2021, according to Mark Gurman (89.1% accurate).

    • Apple is reportedly planning “the next two lines of Apple chips,” with speculation that they could be called M1X and M2
    • 8, 12 or 16 high-performance cores are planned for new MacBook Pro and iMac models, with up to 32-cores coming to the new “half-size” Mac Pro
    • In the graphics department, Apple is working on 16-core and 32-core options for future laptops and desktops
    • The next generation of ARM chips are said to be coming in Spring and Fall 2021, powering new versions of MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac Pro

Our take: If Apple is able to scale the baseline M1 chip…the results are going to literally be off the charts. These redesigned Macs can’t come soon enough.
