  • 5.5-inch iPhone 13 prototype shows no notch & USB-C

    5.5-inch iPhone 13 prototype shows no notch & USB-C

The news: A possible 5.5-inch iPhone prototype for release in 2021 has surfaced, according to Macotakara (67.4% accurate).

    • The notch has been removed, presumably due to in-display Touch ID replacing it
    • Also present on this prototype is USB-C (something most sources have said will never materialize)

Our take: Like the last iPhone 13 leaks, these should be taken as entertainment over anything else. The final design for this year’s iPhone lineup reportedly isn’t even complete. Yet, we’ve been hearing more and more about the removal of the notch on at least one 2021 model…so this is a good sign.

  • 2021 iPad Pro to feature 5G and mini-LED display

2021 iPad Pro to feature 5G and mini-LED display

The news: Next year’s iPad Pro will be the most significant upgrade since 2018, according to L0vetodream (90.5% accurate).

    • A revamped Mini-LED display is coming to the iPad Pro sometime in the first half of 2021
    • 5G support will also be present

Our take: L0vetodream’s insanely good track record speaks for itself: this person, whomever they are, have solid intel. As 2020’s iPad Pro LiDAR upgrade was underwhelming, 2021’s should reinvigorate the line with fresh life.

  • iPad Air 4 to go USB-C, next iPad mini to keep Lightning

iPad Air 4 to go USB-C, next iPad mini to keep Lightning

The news: Apple is transitioning another iPad model to USB-C later this year, according to Macotakara (67.4% accurate).

    • The next iPad Air is (finally) getting a USB-C port
    • But the next iPad mini is sticking with Lightning

Our take: It would be great if every port on every device switched to USB-C overnight…but we know that will never happen. At least Apple isn’t restricting USB-C to Pro iPads only.

  • Safari gaining native translation in iOS 14, better Apple Pencil support

Safari gaining native translation in iOS 14, better Apple Pencil support

The news: iOS 14 will be upgrading the Safari app on iPhone and iPad with some significant new features, according to 9to5Mac (85.8% accurate).

    • Safari is gaining native, on-device translation that is processed offline by the neural engine
      • It could extend to other apps like the App Store, too
    • In Safari on iPadOS, the Apple Pencil will be better supported with markup support

Our take: As somebody who consistently reads content written in languages other than English, this on-device translation is going to be amazing. I could live without better Apple Pencil support, but am glad that is coming, too!

  • 2020 iPhones likely launching in October

2020 iPhones likely launching in October

The news: Apple’s iPhone lineup for this year probably won’t launch in September, according to DigiTimes (61% accurate).

    • The release of “four models and three sizes, is likely to be in October”
    • COVID-19 significantly disrupted Apple’s usually development cycle

Our take: Nearly every single report about the iPhone 12 lineup for this year has mentioned that delays are a strong possibility. The world is still restarting, so a minor one month slip is honestly a good-case scenario.

  • Next Apple Pencil may come in black

Next Apple Pencil may come in black

The news: The next Apple Pencil may be available in a new colorway, according to Mr.white.

    • Black is coming to the Apple Pencil, but it’s unclear if it will be replacing or supplementing white

Our take: As exciting this sounds, Mr. white currently has a very poor track record (25% for 4 rumors). Most of what this source has put out over the years has ended up incorrect, so there’s not a big chance that this will be any different. But to play devil’s advocate here: if a black Apple Pencil is coming…could black AirPods be coming next?

  • iOS 14 to support same devices as iOS 13

iOS 14 to support same devices as iOS 13

The news: iOS 14 will likely support the device you’re holding in your hand right now, according to The Verifier.

    • iPhone 6s and SE aren’t getting cut off as expected this year

Our take: While a 42.5% accurate track record would make me call this into question, The Verifier did get device support for iOS 13 right last year. While 6s and SE users are in luck…this does make me question whether or not iOS 14 will be as big of an update as previously expected…

  • First iOS 13.5.5 beta released to developers

First iOS 13.5.5 beta released to developers

The news: Following the public release of iOS 13.5.1, Apple just released iOS 13.5.5 beta 1 to developers.

    • It appears the update adds Apple Pay support for Hong Kong’s Octopus card

Our take: Alright…it’s to the point where keeping track of these random version numbers is becoming quite challenging. For the average user, the software releases lately have been a jumbled mess with no clear rhyme or reason. Regardless of what’s changing in 13.5.5, it already feels confusing.

  • iOS 13.5.1 update released

    iOS 13.5.1 update released

The news: The follow-up to iOS 13.5 is out for everyone with some “important security updates.”

    • It was around 77MB on my iPhone 11 Pro

Our take: Confirmed by Apple, this patches the unc0ver jailbreak. I’ve looked around and can’t find a single other thing that has changed.

  • Sources disagree on early ‘iPhone 13’ leaks

Sources disagree on early ‘iPhone 13’ leaks

The news: Jon Prosser and L0vetodream (both rated above 86 percent accurate) have shared their thoughts on the purported ‘iPhone 13’ prototype that recently surfaced.

    • Jon Prosser (86.7% accurate) says the 2021 iPhone will have the same optical design as this year’s iPhone 12 (three cameras + LiDAR)
    • L0vetodream (90.5% accurate) says the camera layout is changing next year

Our take: While both sources have a solid track record established…L0vetodream has a slight edge on Prosser here. Still, and regardless, and as stated before…it’s still way too early to know how next year’s phone will actually look. I’d put both sources at 50/50 at this point in time.

First purported iPhone 13 design and details shared

The news, taken with a huge grain of salt: The design and initial camera details for the 2021 iPhone have been shared by @choco_bit.

    • There appear to be four cameras in the main array, with the LiDAR sensor placed below

Our take: It’s wayyyyyyy to early to have a proper opinion on these, as most of this will almost certainly change prior to launch. Let’s just hope we get some sweet optical and digital zoom options.
