Kuo: Apple’s AR headset will launch in Q4 of 2022

The rumor: Apple’s first real AR product is set to launch late next year, according to Ming-Chi Kuo (75.9% accurate).

    • In the note obtained by AppleTrack, Kuo states that the AR headset will have “Mac level of computing power” and “can operate independently, without relying on a Mac…or iPhone”
    • Dual-4K Micro OLED displays may be included to support VR in addition to AR functionality
    • The device, which saw the design leak months ago, is rumored to release in the fourth quarter of 2022

Our take: Mac power, the ability to operate independently and 4K displays have me really starting to look forward to this device. I think the fourth quarter of next year is a very realistic launch timeframe.

  • Apple’s VR headset said to cost around $2,000

Apple’s VR headset said to cost around $2,000

The rumor: Apple’s first serious step into virtual reality will have a hefty cost of entry, according to Mark Gurman (87% accurate, via Power On).

    • In his weekly newsletter, Gurman described the competition between Apple and Meta (Facebook) and their attempts to dominate the virtual world…
    • “Apple’s offering will probably be in the $2,000 range, whereas I expect Meta’s to be quite a bit cheaper” Gurman says

Our take: This number is actually a bit cheaper than The Information’s previous prediction of a $3,000 starting price for Apple’s VR headset that is set to launch sometime in 2022. Still prohibitively expensive for most people, but I can’t wait to see Apple’s take on the product category.

    $3k Apple AR/VR headset first look: interchangeable headbands, 12+ cameras & eye-tracking

The rumor: Apple is continuing work on a high-end mixed reality headset that will debut as soon as next year, according to The Information (90.9% accurate).

    • The illustration of the headset below is a recreation of internal Apple renders from a “late-stage prototype” seen near the end of 2020
    • Advanced eye-tracking, dual 8K displays and more than 12 cameras will reportedly be present on the product when it ships as soon as next year
    • Apple reportedly “has discussed pricing it at $3,000”

Our take: This is the first time we’ve ever seen what this device will exactly look like. Seems pretty simple so far, and that Sport Band type headband just screams Apple to me. A super important part of on-body devices is weight, and it looks like Apple is certainly keeping that to a minimum with lightweight mesh materials.

Mysterious Apple AR product launching in 2021

The rumor: Apple plans to launch a new augmented reality (AR) product sometime in 2021, according to Ming-Chi Kuo (78.2% accurate).

    • This latest report shares no additional details about the AR product, but sources have suggested that a mixed reality AR/VR headset could launch as soon as later this year
    • Kuo also expects new AirPods, MacBook Pro models and AirTags to drop in 2021, as well

Our take: I could see at least the announcement of this AR/VR headset this year. No Apple Glass, though, the full-on pair of AR glasses: those aren’t coming until likely 2022/2023.

  • Apple AR/VR headset to have ‘ultra-high-resolution screens’ and cinematic speakers

Apple AR/VR headset to have ‘ultra-high-resolution screens’ and cinematic speakers

The news: Apple’s mixed AR/VR headset “will make it almost impossible for a user to differentiate the virtual world from the real one,” according to Mark Gurman (84.3% accurate).

    • The wearable device has ultra-high-resolution screens and a cinematic speaker system
    • Apps primarily focused on gaming and watching videos will be available on a dedicated App Store
    • Siri will also be present on the headset

Our take: I’ve tried VR a handful of times but have never been impressed yet–I fail to be enthralled in the different world that the tech promises. I think if anybody can do it, it will be Apple. But even then I’m not sold yet.
