  • Analysis: iOS 14 beta 2 release date

Analysis: iOS 14 beta 2 release date

The analysis: iOS 14 beta 2 will likely be released early next week, according to historical data from Thinky Bits.

    • The average number of days for a beta 1 release (excluding 10.0 as an outlier) is 14.833
    • Monday, July 6 and Tuesday, July 7 at 10am PST are the most likely release dates for iOS 14 beta 2

Our take: Apple could, of course, not follow what they’ve done historically (we are still in the middle of a pandemic that only appears to be growing). But I think Monday and Tuesday next week are most sensible even with the extenuating circumstances.

The fun: Per usual, iOS 14 features stunning new wallpapers that you can get on any device by scrolling down.

    • There are a total of 6 new wallpapers in beta 1, with the possibility that more could be added in the future (possibly in the GM)

Our take: The dark blue and green one is the best. Plus, I’m super happy that Apple included light/dark mode versions yet again. Makes it that much more special.

    • Incoming call UI doesn’t take up the whole display
    • App clips are mini-apps that will allow you to interact with a native interface instantly

Our take: These leaks appear to have originated from a source on Weibo, and it’s unclear if these are just predictions or hard intel. We’ll see in a few hours.

  • iOS 14 may be called ‘iPhone OS’

iOS 14 may be called ‘iPhone OS’

The news: Just over 10 years after switching away from the iPhoneOS moniker, Apple may be reintroducing it at WWDC this year, according to Jon Prosser (86.7% accurate).

    • This would align the mobile operating system with every other major platform (ex. macOS, watchOS, tvOS)
    • iOS 14 is shaping up to be a smaller ‘S’ upgrade, similar to iOS 12

Our take: Shocking, but sensible. When you line every other platform up, there’s one outlier: iOS. Everything old really is new again.

  • iOS 14: Revamped Podcasts app revealed

iOS 14: Revamped Podcasts app revealed

The news: The stock Apple Podcasts app is getting some major upgrades in iOS 14, according to 9to5Mac (85.8% accurate).

    • “For You” tab coming with personalized recommendations
    • Introduction of user profiles to follow your friends and vis versa
    • Creators able to offer bonus content in-app

Our take: Apple’s Podcasts app has certainly lost traction to platforms like Spotify and YouTube over the years. If these are the only new changes this year…I don’t think that’s going to be enough to catch up.

  • iOS 14: Animated emoji found in early build (update: nope)

iOS 14: Animated emoji found in early build (update: nope)

Update: According to users on Twitter, these animated emoji are actually present in a current version of the clips app. Our earlier story got this info incorrect and we no longer expect broader animated emoji support in iOS 14.

The news: Apple could introduce animated emoji (different from Animoji) as soon as iOS 14, according to @blue_kanikama.

    • Rather than moving Animoji characters, these are animated versions of existing Unicode emoji
    • Notes, stars, dumbbells, confetti, music notes and more are present, per @blue_kanikama
    • The files were found in an early December 2019 build of iOS 14

Our take: Although these are real images obtained from an early build of iOS 14, there is no guarantee that they will actually be included as a user-facing feature. That being said, this seems small enough to have hopefully made the cut for June 22.

  • iOS 14: Possible look at new Control Center toggles

iOS 14: Possible look at new Control Center toggles

The news: With WWDC just days away now, we have our first look at what could be new iOS 14 toggles in Control Center, according to @blue_kanikama.

    • 2 new toggles may be on the way:
      • Sleep mode: for tracking your sleep
      • Accessibility sound detection: for alerting people who are hearing-impaired if an alarm/alert/siren is sounding
    • The images are from an early build of iOS 14 from December 2019, so it’s possible they might not make the public release

Our take: Sleep mode has been long rumored, and it seems 2020 will finally be the year that it drops. And accessibility sound detection has previously been rumored by 9to5Mac.
