  • New MacBook Pro could have ‘M1 Pro’ or ‘M1 Max’ chips inside

New MacBook Pro could have ‘M1 Pro’ or ‘M1 Max’ chips inside

The rumor: We might not see an M1X chip inside the upcoming 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models after all, according to a new rumor shared by Mark Gurman (87.3% accurate, via Power On).

    • A “developer tells me that new MacBook Pro chips have appeared in logs under the names “M1 Pro” and “M1 Max.” I’m not saying Apple will take that direction with its actual marketing names, but that’s another—albeit more confusing—possibility” Gurman says
    • Prior to this new rumor, “M1X” was the expected name for Apple’s next-generation M1 chips expected to be unveiled in less than 24 hours at the October 18 ‘Unleashed’ Apple event

Our take: Gurman makes an incredibly good point here: M1 is a marketing term before anything else. “M1X” or “M1Z” sound inherently techy while something like “M1 Pro” or “M1 Max” feels more familiar (ex. iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max). I’m still not convicted that these will be the new processor names, either, but I don’t think it’s impossible.

  • Gurman: M1X MacBook Pros will feature faster charging

Gurman: M1X MacBook Pros will feature faster charging

The rumor: The return of MagSafe on the upcoming MacBook Pros will enable more than just a trip-free experience, according to Mark Gurman (87.3% accurate, via Power On).

    • “MagSafe charging will make its return to the side of the new MacBook Pro, following the addition of MagSafe to the iPhone 12 last year. That means the charger connects magnetically so it quickly yanks out if someone trips on the cord. Charging speeds will also be faster” Gurman says
    • Other ports, like HDMI and an SD card reader will be making their re-debut at Apple’s ‘Unleashed’ event on Monday

Our take: I’ve never truly had a problem with the charge speed on my MacBook Pro, but it does seem to fill up significantly slower than any of my other Apple devices (likely because it has the largest battery). I’d love to see a faster charging option like we have on iPhone and Apple Watch.

  • Alleged M1X MacBook Pro leak shows bezel-less display with notch & more

Alleged M1X MacBook Pro leak shows bezel-less display with notch & more

The leak: Just hours ahead of Apple’s ‘Unleashed’ event on Monday morning, new images of the upcoming MacBook Pro have been shared by Weibo user AnyTurtle999 (not yet tracked, via DuanRui).

    • The photos, which show an almost entirely bezel-less display similar to what can be seen on iPhone 13, depict a completely revamped display made possible by the presence of a notch
    • Rumors of a notched MacBook Pro began earlier this week, but were largely dismissed…until now
    • Face ID does not appear to be part of the new notch design: it looks to just be a camera (said to finally be 1080p)

Our take: Wow. I didn’t believe these notch rumors until now…but I think I love it. This has allowed Apple to essentially eliminate the display borders and these two images look futuristic as hell. This year’s MacBook Pro redesign isn’t a step forward, it’s a leap.

  • New rumors say AirPods 3 coming at October 18 ‘Unleashed’ Apple event

New rumors say AirPods 3 coming at October 18 ‘Unleashed’ Apple event

The rumor: Apple is ready to launch AirPods 3, according to Weibo source PandaIsBald (not yet rated) and analyst Wedbush Securities (71.4% accurate, source).

    • Both sources, which admittedly have mixed track records, believe that Apple will launch third-generation AirPods on Monday at the next Apple event
    • Rumors have swirled for months about the launch of AirPods 3 and have been extensively leaked for months

Our take: While I want these to come so badly next week, I’m still not entirely convinced that they will make an appearance. AirPods and Mac updates at the same time feels off to me, but I think a release is still somewhat plausible.

  • M1X MacBook Pro: Final details leaked

M1X MacBook Pro: Final details leaked

The rumor(s): Trusted Mac leaker dylandkt (75% accurate) has shared what may be the final details for the upcoming 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros, set to be unveiled in just under a week.

    New info

    • 120Hz prototype in testing, but unsure if it will appear on these new devices
    • Slimmer bezels with no “MacBook Pro” branding
    • Updated chargers (likely with MagSafe support)
    • Base M1X configuration is identical between both sizes, with 16GB RAM and 512GB storage
    • Similar pricing between both models
    • Multiple display support

    Repeat info

    • 14 and 16-inch Mini-LED displays
    • 1080p webcam
    • Touch Bar will be removed
    • HDMI port, SD Card Slot and MagSafe returning

Our take: All in all: these new MacBook Pros sound incredible, and I haven’t been more excited for a new Apple product in years. I have yet to see or hear of a negative for these machines…

  • Apple Watch Series 8 could come in 3 different sizes

Apple Watch Series 8 could come in 3 different sizes

The rumor: Apple is planning to introduce a third size variant for the Apple Watch Series 8, according to Ross Young (100% accurate).

    • Apple currently sells 41 and 45mm watches, but the new report suggests that a third size could also be added…we’re just not sure if it would be smaller or larger
    • Prior rumors have pointed to a rugged, more durable Apple Watch debuting next year alongside other Series 8 models

Our take: I didn’t get this rumor at first…but as soon as I looked at my wrist, I realized that I could wear a larger face on my arm. I think a slightly larger 48 or 49mm watch could look great on folks with larger wrists. This is just speculation though, as Young didn’t clarify which direction the size change would head.

  • 120Hz display may land on new MacBook Pros next week

120Hz display may land on new MacBook Pros next week

The rumor: Mini-LED tech won’t be the only screen upgrade on the new M1X MacBook Pro models, according to Ross Young (100% accurate).

    • Apple is planning to bring a 120Hz ProMotion displays to the next-generation 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros that are set to debut at Apple’s ‘Unleashed’ event next week
    • This is the first rumor for a 120Hz display, but Ross Young does have an impeccable track record for leaks like this

Our take: This will be game changing if we see this next week. And I wouldn’t believe it unless it ross from Young, who has never gotten an Apple screen leak wrong yet. I can’t imagine how good macOS would look at 120Hz…
