Sensor-shift stabilization may come to all iPhone 13 models

The rumor: Apple may be expanding one of the most impressive features on iPhone 12 Pro Max to more models in 2021, according to DigiTimes (65.1% accurate).

    • Sensor-shift stabilization works to minimize shakiness by steading the entire camera sensor, not just the lens
    • DigiTimes says that sensor-shift stabilization will come to all iPhone 13 models in 2021

Our take: Sensor-shift stabilization is, by far, the most impressive camera upgrades in years. Video has been the best on iPhone for as long as I can remember, and this will keep things competitive.

  • Next Mac Pro could resemble Power Mac G4 cube

Next Mac Pro could resemble Power Mac G4 cube

The rumor: Apple is planning two new models of the Mac Pro, with one being significantly smaller than what we have currently, according to Mark Gurman (89.1% accurate).

    • 2 new models: the first will look identical to what we have now, but with faster Intel chips; the second will be less than half the size of the current Mac Pro with Apple Silicon inside
    • Gurman notes the smaller Mac Pro design “will feature a mostly aluminum exterior and could invoke nostalgia for the Power Mac G4 Cube, a short-lived smaller version of the Power Mac, an earlier iteration of the Mac Pro”

Our take: The current Mac Pro is a pretty sizable machine, but slimming it down to less than half its current size? That will be a sight to see. Depending on how powerful the 2021 iMacs are, this new machine could definitely be a contender for me.

2021 iMac redesign detailed: ultra-thin bezels and flat back

The rumor: After nearly a decade, Apple is planning a major overhaul for the next generation iMacs, according to Mark Gurman (89.1% accurate).

    • Bezels on the new iMac will be similar to those found on the Pro Display XDR
    • The rear housing of the iMac will also return to being flat
    • “The iMac redesign will be one of the biggest visual updates to any Apple product this year” Gurman says

Our take: If there is one product that I’m looking forward to this year–more than anything else–it’s this new iMac. I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on this machine. It is shaping up to be the perfect machine for me!

  • iPhone 13 to be ‘S’ upgrade, in-screen fingerprint reader & no ports in testing

iPhone 13 to be ‘S’ upgrade, in-screen fingerprint reader & no ports in testing

The rumor: Apple is planning an ‘S’ year upgrade for the 2021 iPhones, according to Mark Gurman (89.1% accurate).

    • The new in-screen fingerprint scanner (supplied by Qualcomm) will likely be used in tandem with Face ID
    • Apple is also testing some models with no charging port, in favor of exclusively wireless charging

Our take: Good to hear both of these are on the table this year from Gurman, who is the source I trust the most. Although there may not be as many upgrades on the phones this year, I’m personally stoked for Touch ID to make a comeback.

  • 2021 14/16″ MacBook Pros to have upgraded screens, release in mid-2021

2021 14/16″ MacBook Pros to have upgraded screens, release in mid-2021

Updated 1/22: Gurman has released a new report saying that the SD card reader will make its way back to MacBook Pros as part of an upgraded I/O effort.

The rumor: Apple’s redesigned MacBook Pro models are coming in the middle of 2021, according to Mark Gurman (89.1% accurate).

Similar to Kuo’s recent report, here’s what to expect:

    • “Minor design changes” for the new MacBook Pro models
    • 14/16-inch displays, with “brighter, higher-contrast panels”
    • New Apple Silicon chips with “more cores and enhanced graphics”
    • MagSafe port replacing current USB-C charging which will support faster charging
    • The Touch Bar may be removed
    • A new, redesigned MacBook Air is also in the works…but it isn’t coming anytime soon

Our take: Seems like Kuo and Gurman disagree on how significant the design changes will be. Incredible to hear that the displays are getting significant upgrades and faster charging is in the works. These machines sound almost perfect.

The rumor: Apple is preparing to give Mac users what they’ve been asking for for years, according to Ming-Chi Kuo (78.2% accurate).

Here are the (wildly exciting) details:

    • 14 and 16-inch models with a revamped chassis similar to the iPhone 12 or iPad Pro with a “flat-edged form factor”
    • The Touch Bar is going away, with a physical function row taking its place
    • MagSafe is returning in some form (!)
    • More I/O will be added, a significant step up from the strictly USB-C offerings available now
    • All models will be equipped with new Apple Silicon chips

Our take: I had to read all of this twice to make sure I wasn’t dreaming. This upcoming machine, to the tee, is what I have been asking for for years.

Apple’s big announcement: 3 new Racial Equity and Justice Initiative projects

The news: Apple just announced three major initiatives as part of its $100 million Racial Equity and Justice Initiative (REJI).

    • First, the Propel Center: “a first-of-its-kind innovation and learning hub for the HBCU community,” with virtual access and a physical hub at the Atlanta University Center
    • Second, an Apple Developer Academy: opening in Detroit, this is the first of its kind in the United States will offer both 30-day and 10-12 month intensive coding programs
    • Third, venture capital funding for Black and Brown entrepreneurs: $10 million for Harlem Capital and $25 million for Siebert Williams Shank’s Clear Vision Impact Fund

Our take: As expected, today’s big news was an expansion on Apple’s prior social justice initiatives: these are wonderful. Great interview with Cook on CBS below.

Potential first look at new 11-inch 2021 iPad Pro

The leak: The first likely legitimate renders for the 2021 iPad Pro have been shared by MySmartPrice.

    • New dimensions of 245.74 x 176.61 x 5.9mm (old: 247.6 x 178.5 x 5.9mm): these keep the tablet just as thick but make it just under 1% smaller
    • The speakers are also changing: On the bottom of the new iPad Pro, the speakers have fewer holes and have also moved a bit
    • There also may be a third mic placed at the top of the device, but the overall design is staying for another year

Our take: Wasn’t expecting anything major for the iPad Pro this year, but with Mini-LED coming I thought there may have been some additional design changes. Expecting this to release in March.

The news: Apple has a “big announcement” scheduled for tomorrow, according to a recent interview with CBS.

    • Gayle King calls the announcement “very exciting” with full details coming through an interview with Tim Cook on January 13
    • What do we know about tomorrow? “It is not a new product…” King says. “It’s something I think bigger and better than that”

Our take: Bigger than a new product? Have a feeling this is going to be a big privacy announcement/service of some kind.

  • iPhone SE 3 could release in April

iPhone SE 3 could release in April

The rumor: Amid mixed rumors for a third-generation iPhone SE, MacOtakara (68.6% accurate) has shared some potentially good news.

Our take: I’m fully behind rumors of new AirPods in April, but I have some serious doubts about a new iPhone SE…considering that no one else, so far, has said that a new SE is coming this year. We’ll see.
