Apple’s big announcement: 3 new Racial Equity and Justice Initiative projects

The news: Apple just announced three major initiatives as part of its $100 million Racial Equity and Justice Initiative (REJI).

  • First, the Propel Center: “a first-of-its-kind innovation and learning hub for the HBCU community,” with virtual access and a physical hub at the Atlanta University Center
  • Second, an Apple Developer Academy: opening in Detroit, this is the first of its kind in the United States will offer both 30-day and 10-12 month intensive coding programs
  • Third, venture capital funding for Black and Brown entrepreneurs: $10 million for Harlem Capital and $25 million for Siebert Williams Shank’s Clear Vision Impact Fund

Our take: As expected, today’s big news was an expansion on Apple’s prior social justice initiatives: these are wonderful. Great interview with Cook on CBS below.
