  • Apple TV 6 refresh possible as soon as tomorrow

Apple TV 6 refresh possible as soon as tomorrow

The news: Apple may be finally updating the Apple TV very soon, according to a new asset published on iCloud and spotted by 9to5Mac (77% accurate).

    • A newly uploaded identifier called ‘AppleTV11,1’ doesn’t correspond to any existing model
    • Apple also uploaded four new assets corresponding to four new iPhones models being announced tomorrow

Our take: Previous reports suggested the Apple TV 6 may have been delayed until 2021, but it wouldn’t make sense for Apple to upload this identifier unless a launch was imminent, right? The only thing that makes me doubt this is the lack of an Apple TV mention in the Kang 康总 (97.8% accurate) leak dump.

iPhone 12 design leak shows slightly smaller notch on iCloud

The news: Fresh icons just uploaded to iCloud.com showcase our potential first look at the iPhone 12 design, according to 9to5Mac (77% accurate) and @AppleSWUpdates.

    • 4 new icons were uploaded, confirming that four new phones are coming
      • iPhone 13,1
      • iPhone 13,2
      • iPhone 13,3
      • iPhone 13,4
    • In a comparison by 9to5Mac, the notch on the new icon is slightly narrower and features a different curve when compared to iPhone XR

Our take: This could be a placeholder, but I compared it against a number of other models myself and the curvature here is distinctly unique. The notch may be getting ever-so-slightly smaller across the board on iPhone 12 this year.

‘Apple One’ name confirmed, services bundle coming soon

The news: Apple is preparing to launch a multi-tiered services bundle, according to evidence discovered by 9to5Mac (75.1% accurate) and MacRumors (63.6% accurate).

    • Apple just registered a bunch of new domains like appleone.audio, appleone.film and appleone.website
    • Code in iOS 14 also references the following features for the upcoming bundle
      • “Cancel Apple One”
      • “Keep Apple One”
      • “You can unsubscribe from Apple One and keep only what you want”

Our take: Seems like Apple One will probably be announced at the event on Tuesday. That being said, the savings aren’t even said to be that great.

  • iOS 14: Revamped Podcasts app revealed

iOS 14: Revamped Podcasts app revealed

The news: The stock Apple Podcasts app is getting some major upgrades in iOS 14, according to 9to5Mac (85.8% accurate).

    • “For You” tab coming with personalized recommendations
    • Introduction of user profiles to follow your friends and vis versa
    • Creators able to offer bonus content in-app

Our take: Apple’s Podcasts app has certainly lost traction to platforms like Spotify and YouTube over the years. If these are the only new changes this year…I don’t think that’s going to be enough to catch up.

  • iOS 14 won’t feature call recording

iOS 14 won’t feature call recording

The news: The below image that has been circulating online for days now is real…but call recording is probably not coming to iOS 14, according to 9to5Mac (85.8% accurate).

    • While this feature is present in an early build of iOS 14, reliable sources say “it’s not intended to be made available to users”
    • The call recording feature is only available in internal builds of iOS

Our take: The legal hurdles that Apple would have to pull to make this feature available would be astounding: call recording is illegal in many, many places. Couple this with the fact that it’s an internal feature and…yeah, this isn’t happening anytime soon.

  • Safari gaining native translation in iOS 14, better Apple Pencil support

Safari gaining native translation in iOS 14, better Apple Pencil support

The news: iOS 14 will be upgrading the Safari app on iPhone and iPad with some significant new features, according to 9to5Mac (85.8% accurate).

    • Safari is gaining native, on-device translation that is processed offline by the neural engine
      • It could extend to other apps like the App Store, too
    • In Safari on iPadOS, the Apple Pencil will be better supported with markup support

Our take: As somebody who consistently reads content written in languages other than English, this on-device translation is going to be amazing. I could live without better Apple Pencil support, but am glad that is coming, too!

  • Next macOS update to include revamped Messages app

Next macOS update to include revamped Messages app

The news: Apple is planning to massively upgrade the Messages app with iOS features in the next version of macOS, according to iOS 14 code obtained by 9to5Mac.

    • Proper iMessage effects, stickers, apps, name and photo sharing and more will finally be available
    • Rather than adding native features to the existing app, Apple plans to turn it into a Catalyst version (this essentially means porting the iOS version over)

Our take: The Messages app on macOS has seen no significant changes, whatsoever, for years. Even if it doesn’t feel as great as if Apple coded the features natively, Catalyst apps on Mac are still largely good and get the job done. At this point, I’d take almost anything over the current featured-stalled Messages app.
