M2 chip could launch in new MacBook Air in first half of 2022

The rumor: Apple’s next major M-series chip is coming next year in a new MacBook Air, according to dylandkt (81.3% accurate).

    • The M2 chip is separate from the upcoming M1X chip, and will come in the first half of 2022 inside a new MacBook
    • This source also mentions that the MacBook Air will be colorful, as Jon Prosser (74.2% accurate) had previously reported

Our take: dylandkt has a wildly good track record for these types of scoops, so I would bet on this being the case. Seems like M1/2/3 will be for consumer level hardware and M1/2/3X will be for pro devices.

  • Redesigned MacBook Air: ‘M2’ chip, coming as soon as the end of the year

Redesigned MacBook Air: ‘M2’ chip, coming as soon as the end of the year

The rumor: A new MacBook Air is just months away at the earliest, according to Mark Gurman (88.7% accurate, via Bloomberg).

    • While not coining the M2 processor by name, Gurman says “Apple is planning a direct successor to the M1 processor” for the next MacBook Air and lower-end MacBook Pro models
    • The next generation ‘M2’ chip will still have 8 cores but will “run faster,” but the GPU cores will increase to 9 or 10 (from 7 or 8)
    • At the earliest, the redesigned MacBook Air will debut sometime near the end of 2021

Our take: Staying with 8 CPU cores on base Macs makes sense considering how insane the M1 chip is already (I feel like more than this would be overkill ATM). But increasing the GPU cores? This is great news. The Mac has always lagged in this area, and call me crazy, but…could this be a preliminary road to Macs as serious gaming devices one day?

  • First look at next MacBook Air shows new design, colors & more

First look at next MacBook Air shows new design, colors & more

The leak: Apple’s next MacBook Air will feature an all-new design and more, according to Jon Prosser (77.6% accurate).

    • The new design is not tapered, but rather completely flat and nearly as thin as the USB-C port on the side
    • Prosser mentions that the exact sizing of the display is a guess, but the bezels on this prototype are white
    • An updated keyboard features full-size function row keys and the same Touch ID sensor as the new iMac keyboards
    • The rubber feet on the bottom of the MacBook Air have been swapped for two long rubber bars

Our take: I think this design looks phenomenal, and it seriously seems like this is as thin as they can go. We’ve seen a lot of Apple’s new base silicon designs, but I’m still most excited to see the next M-series of Pro models…

  • Apple’s next MacBook Air could come in blue & more colors

Apple’s next MacBook Air could come in blue & more colors

The rumor: Apple may be updating the new MacBook Air with fresh colors, according to Jon Prosser (77.6% accurate).

    • Prosser’s source, who hasn’t been wrong yet, claims to have seen a blue MacBook Air prototype recently…sparking parallels to the revamped colors on the new iMac
    • Apple could be updating the MacBook Air with a thinner and lighter design as soon as sometime later this year

Our take: This is wonderful news and it lines up with a more general strategy that I see Apple deploying with fun colors for their lower-end products and serious shades for their higher-end offerings. People love colors and most people aren’t buying Pro Apple products.

  • 2021 MacBook Air: Slimmer bezels, thinner/lighter design & MagSafe

2021 MacBook Air: Slimmer bezels, thinner/lighter design & MagSafe

The rumor: Apple is preparing a redesigned MacBook Air that could release as soon as soon as the second half of 2021, according to Mark Gurman (89.1% accurate).

    Here’s what to expect:

    • “Thinner and lighter” design with Apple Silicon inside
    • The same 13.3-inch display, but with slim bezels
    • 2 USB 4 ports for I/O
    • MagSafe charging is also making a comeback
    • This new MacBook Air will be a higher-end offering, with the existing model remaining as the entry-level option

Our take: Seems like Apple is giving all their notebooks the thinner bezel treatment in 2021, which will make them look significantly more modern. For the MacBook Air, I’m most excited to see how the thinnest and lightest MacBook gets thinner and lighter.

  • Apple may announce 2 new 13-inch MacBooks on November 10

Apple may announce 2 new 13-inch MacBooks on November 10

The rumor: Apple is preparing significant updates to 2 of their most popular notebooks, according to Lovetodream (88.5% accurate).

    • First to get Apple Silicon will likely be 2 new MacBook models
    • Apple currently offers two notebooks in a 13-inch size: MacBook Air and MacBook Pro
    • Previous rumors suggested Apple would bring back the ‘MacBook’ line

Our take: As I’ve said from the beginning, Apple is planning to start small and build up to bigger and better computers with their own silicon inside. This makes perfect sense to me.

  • Apple Silicon MacBook Air & Pro to ship by end of 2020

Apple Silicon MacBook Air & Pro to ship by end of 2020

The rumor: The first notebooks featuring Apple silicon will launch before the end of the year, according to DigiTimes (61% accurate).

    • Both a MacBook Air and MacBook Pro could ship before the end of 2020
    • This is the start of Apple’s transition away from Intel-designed processors

Our take: It’s pretty exciting that these ARM Macs are already shipping later this year. With the transition happening so quickly, it makes me question a) what the hold-up is on the Intel-based iMac refresh and b) why Apple wouldn’t just refresh it with Apple silicon in the first place.
