New 15-inch MacBook rumored to drop in 2023 with M2 & M2 Pro chips

The rumor: A larger 15-inch MacBook could release with both the new M2 chip and the yet-to-be-announced M2 Pro chip, according to further details from Ming-Chi Kuo (72.5% accurate).

  • The larger MacBook is slated to start mass production in early 2022 and ship in the second half of 2023
  • Kuo also expects the MacBook to ship with two CPU options: M2 and M2 Pro
  • It’s possible that this 15-inch MacBook might not use “MacBook Air” branding, as Apple could introduce it as part of a different or new line
  • In the report, Kuo also says he is uncertain about the 12-inch MacBook returning after Mark Gurman (86.5% accurate) reported that it was in development

Ian’s take: This is certainly an interesting rumor. I am absolutely a fan of Apple adding options for users that want a larger screen but don’t want to spend upwards of $2500 to get it. Having the option for an M2 Pro chip in this thinner and lighter machine is very intriguing, but I worry it may encroach on the 16-inch M2 Pro MacBook Pro coming later this year…

New 15-inch MacBook Air said to release in Spring 2023

The rumor: Apple is working on a larger version of the all-new MacBook Air that was just announced at WWDC22, according to Mark Gurman (86.5% accurate, via Bloomberg).

  • “The 15-inch model under development is a wider version of the 13.6-inch MacBook Air that Apple announced this week…Apple had previously considered a 15-inch variation for this year’s MacBook Air, but shelved those plans to focus on the 13.6-inch version,” Gurman says
  • This first-of-its-kind MacBook Air is said to release sometime in Spring 2023, a reasonable time for Apple to hold a special event unveiling new products

Sam’s take: I’m seeing the genius here of staggering MacBook Air screen sizes in between those of the MacBook Pro. By the end of next year, the MacBook lineup is going to look like this: 13.6, 14.2, 15 and 16.2-inch displays across 4 different notebooks. There really is going to be a size and form factor for everyone…rather than just doubling down with the exact same sizes across the board as they did historically. I cannot wait for this larger MacBook Air (which I would bet will have a M2 chip inside).

Apple’s new MacBook Air coming next week will only be available in these 4 colors

The rumor: The new MacBook Air coming at WWDC isn’t going to be as colorful as we previously thought, according to Mark Gurman (86.5% accurate).

Sam’s take: This new rumor from Gurman doesn’t match what other sources like Jon Prosser (69.1% accurate) and Ming-Chi Kuo (72.5% accurate) have said previously…so I’m not entirely sold on the fact that only blue is coming. At the same time, Gurman’s track record doesn’t lie…

Some MacBook Air models are out of stock ahead of rumored WWDC refresh

The news: Some MacBook Air models are seeing lagged shipping times, as first spotted by Mark Gurman (86.5% accurate).

  • Both models of the M1 MacBook Air aren’t shipping out until June 8, where other M1 machines are shipping within 2-3 days
  • Apple is rumored to introduce a redesigned MacBook Air at WWDC on June 6 according to recent rumors

Sam’s take: The evidence of a new MacBook Air coming on Monday is mounting. This is, by far, the most likely new piece of hardware we’re going to see…but I’m still betting on a teaser of the AR/VR headset or new Mac Pro, too. But it’s only a few more days until we definitely see this colorful MacBook Air.

New MacBook Air rumored to release at WWDC on June 6

The rumor: Apple is planning to unveil a new MacBook Air at their worldwide developers conference next week, according to Mark Gurman (86.5% accurate, via Power On).

  • “If there’s any hardware at WWDC, it will likely be on the Mac side. The company has been aiming to launch the next MacBook Air with M2 chips at the conference. The recent supply chain crunch due to Covid-related closures in China has complicated that, but developers say that Apple employees are increasingly using next-generation MacBook Airs with their apps. That’s a sign that the new Mac is close,” Gurman says
  • A teaser of the upcoming AR/VR headset could also happen, but a full unveil isn’t likely according to Gurman

Sam’s take: Since Apple themselves has confirmed that they are done unveiling M1 series chips, it makes perfect sense that they would start with M2 sooner rather than later. I think this new MacBook Air is incredibly likely, but I also think we’ll be getting a preview of the AR/VR headset or new Mac Pro, too.

15-inch MacBook Air may launch in 2023…yes, please!

The rumor: Apple may be working on a big brother to the 13-inch MacBook Air, according to Ross Young (92.9% accurate, via 9to5Mac).

Here are the big takeaways from the Quarterly Advanced IT Display Shipment and Technology Report…

  • Apple is planning a new version of the current MacBook Air with a larger screen between 13 and 14-inches
  • There is also said to be a second MacBook Air with a screen size of around 15-inches in the works, too
  • On an unrelated note, a new $329 iPad with a “slightly larger” display is also in development

Sam’s take: This is the MacBook that I think should replace the base 13-inch MacBook Pro that exists currently. Why do we need a base version of a Pro device when a 15-inch MacBook Air could fill that spot in a much more useful way? I’m really hoping we see this, even though I’m not convinced it will actually happen.

M2 MacBook Air now expected to debut later in 2022

The rumor: Apple’s new MacBook Air won’t be out for a few more months still, according to Mark Gurman (86.4% accurate).

  • “It was due to launch either at the end of last year or early this year, but now it should be coming around the second half of the year” Gurman says
  • Apple’s new MacBook Air will be powered by the upcoming M2 chip and be completely redesigned with new colors and MagSafe charging

Sam’s take: At this point, we’ve been waiting on this notebook for quite some time now…and it almost sounds as if Apple pushed this back in order to give the M1 Ultra chip some room to breathe after it just released in the Mac Studio. Either way, this is still shaping up to the MacBook Air upgrade ever so it’s worth waiting for if you can do it.

That being said…the current M1 MacBook Air is an incredible value and it continues to be the best Mac for most people.

M2 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro set to release before end of 2022

The rumor: Apple is working on new laptops with M2 chips inside, according to 9to5Mac (82.4% accurate).

Here’s the latest…

  • The new MacBook Air, releasing later this year, will have a M2 chip inside featuring an 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU, 9to5Mac says
  • Apple’s also preparing to drop a new 13-inch MacBook Pro…but it’s based on the previous-generation design that could include a Touch Bar (it’ll have the same M2 chip described above)

Sam’s take: There have been numerous conflicting reports on what Mac laptops Apple will end up releasing this year, but this news seems to paint the clearest picture yet: we’re getting 2 lower-end laptops with new M2 chips. Sounds right to me.

New 2022 MacBook Air renders show white bezels and notch + MagSafe charging

The images: New renders courtesy of Jon Prosser (74.6% accurate) and RendersByIan provide our best look yet at Apple’s upcoming, redesigned MacBook Air.

Our take: Call me crazy…but I love it. I’m highly skeptical of the exact level of thinness shown in these renders (because it looks impossibly slim), but I dig the white look for this notebook. Still, I down with the idea of the MacBook Air being ultra-thin and fun with the MacBook Pro being a thicker, more serious machine.

New MacBook Air rumored to launch in mid-2022 with new colors, fresh design

The rumor: Apple is planning to release a new MacBook Air with additional color options and more next year, according to Ming-Chi Kuo (76.6% accurate).

Our take: This sounds like a really solid MacBook Air upgrade and the colors are going to be so refreshing. Excited for next year.

2022 MacBook Air will be redesigned, have new Mini-LED display

The rumor: The next MacBook Pro will be the most significant upgrade since the original model was unveiled, according to Ming-Chi Kuo (76.6% accurate).

  • The next MacBook Air will be redesigned, and it’s possible we may have already seen what it will look like
  • It is also said to don a Mini-LED display like the one found on the latest 12.9-inch iPad Pro
  • More recent rumors have suggested the new MacBook Air will have an M2 chip inside and ship in the first half of next year

Our take: The next MacBook Air…kind of sounds like a pro device? I’m sure the performance won’t be as wild as the MacBook Pro, but I’m surprised to hear Mini-LED is coming to the Air so soon.
