    • It’s available for pre-order this Friday and ships on April 30
  • ‘Apple Podcasts+’ may debut at April 20 event

‘Apple Podcasts+’ may debut at April 20 event

The rumor: Apple’s premium podcast subscription service is launching tomorrow, according to Peter Kafka (not yet tracked).

    • Kafka says that Apple will launch a paid subscription service for podcasts at their April 20 event
    • There have previously been rumblings of Apple stepping up their podcast plan, but no one has called a potential launch date until now

Our take: I have no idea who Kafka is, but considering he’s an executive editor at Recode and verified on Twitter, I assume there is some weight behind this. I just don’t know how much.

  • New report says ‘there could be a few surprises’ at Apple event tomorrow

New report says ‘there could be a few surprises’ at Apple event tomorrow

The rumors: Apple is preparing to launch a slew of new iPad models and more on Tuesday, according to Wedbush Securities (78.6% accurate, via MacRumors).

    • New iPads are coming: the report says that new entry-level iPad, iPad mini and iPad Pro models will be the focus of the event
      • iPad and iPad mini would be priced as they are currently, but iPad Pro is said to be getting more expensive
      • A new Apple Pencil may also be unveiled
    • A few surprises: Wedbush says iMacs, AirTags, and AirPods 3 could all debut at the 4/20 event
      • New iMac models may come in additional colorways
      • As for new AirPods, the report says that they likely won’t release until sometime this Summer…any mention at the event would simply be as a tease

Our take: Woah. Lots of new info in this report that no one else has called yet. For the iPads, a new mini AND new entry-level model are coming? I doubt this because no other credible sources have said so. Price increase for the Pro iPads would be pretty wild though, considering they already start at $799. I still absolutely believe we’ll be seeing new iMacs this event, but am not holding my breath for new AirPods.

A brief history of Apple event invites & Easter eggs

Ahead of Apple’s highly-anticipated April special event, let’s take a look back at what previous invites have subliminally alluded to. If an event isn’t listed, there are no known references or hints.

    2020

    November 10

    • Nothing in the invite, but the AR Easter egg showed an Apple logo that opened just like a MacBook (this was the M1 event)

    October 13

    • ‘Hi, Speed.’ Tagline confirms the introduction of 5G
    • Circle-enclosed Apple logo exactly matches the bottom of HomePod mini, which was announced at this event
    • Background of the invite is dark blue which matches the new color of both iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro

    September 15

    • ‘Time flies.’ This tagline confirmed a new Apple Watch would be unveiled
    • The blue Apple logo perfectly matched the new Sky Blue color for the redesigned iPad Air

    June 22

    • ‘hello’ was cemented in history when the Mac was first introduced in 1984: its presence on the invite suggested the launch for Apple Silicon was imminent

    2019

    September 10

    • The multi-color Apple logo featured green and purple on the top and bottom of the graphic: these were the two new colors available on iPhone 11

    March 12

    • ‘It’s show time.’ This tagline directly referenced Apple would be unveiling a number of new services, especially Apple TV+

    2018

    September 12

    • ‘Gather round.’ The tagline and graphic are both gold…which was the big new color for the iPhone XS lineup.

    March 27

    • ‘Let’s take a field trip.’ The tagline and graphic were both drawn with Apple Pencil, and at the education-foucsed event a new iPad with Apple Pencil support was announced.

    2017

    September 12

    • The multi-color Apple logo wound up being our first look at the marketing wallpaper for iPhone X

    2016

    October 27

    • ‘hello again.’ The tagline is a direct reference, again, to the original Macintosh unveil in 1984, confirming new Macs would be announced
    • The clouded Apple logo is identical to marketing wallpapers included with redesigned MacBook Pro models

    September 7

    • ‘See you on the 7th.’ The tagline so prominently featuring the number 7 confirmed their next smartphone would be called iPhone 7.
    • The bokeh circles that make up the Apple logo previewed the Portrait Mode would be coming on iPhone 7 Plus

    2015

    March 9

    • ‘Spring forward.’ The tagline alludes to time changing, signaling the release of the long-awaited Apple Watch

    2013

    September 10

  • Gurman: Apple’s April 20 Spring Loaded event won’t be ‘particularly innovative’

Gurman: Apple’s April 20 Spring Loaded event won’t be ‘particularly innovative’

The rumor: Apple won’t be unveiling anything at their April 20 event that “we haven’t seen before,” according to Mark Gurman (89.1% accurate).

    • “Nothing that you’re going to be seeing next week is going to be particularly innovative, in my humble opinion,” Gurman says…but notes an iMac launch at the event would change his mind
    • New products expected on April 20 include a new MiniLED iPad Pro with 5G, AirTags and potentially a new iMac with Apple Silicon inside

Our take: It seems Gurman is still split on whether or not the new iMac is coming on Tuesday…even tweaking his verbiage about innovation to say, ‘well, I won’t be impressed unless it comes out.’ I think this is mostly fair, but I don’t know of any MiniLED tablets on the market currently: the improved contrast ratio will surely be stunning.

Report suggests media ‘will soon’ receive new Apple products

The rumor: Apple may be seeding review units of new Apple products to members of the media “soon,” according to DuanRui on Twitter.

    • DuanRui, a Twitter account who frequently aggregates rumors spawning in Asia, says “Some people say that Apple’s cooperative media will soon receive new Apple products,” but also notes, “I don’t know if it is true or not”
    • Apple is rumored to hold an event sometime in April where an updated iPad Pro and AirTags will be released

Our take: There’s a lot of smoke for new products this month. At a minimum, we will be seeing a new iPad Pro. But I’m hopeful for AirTags as part of a larger event, too.

  • Source says Apple’s April releases will include iPad Pro, new AirPods & accessories

    • A new version of the iPad Pro, updated AirPods and new accessories are said to be coming at some point in April
    • Pan specifically mentions that a redesigned iPad mini will not be appearing this month

Our take: Again, while Uncle Pan is not proven to be a reliable source just yet, I think his tidbits are legitimate. Plus, Pan’s post about new Spring MagSafe cases matches up exactly with what a totally different source posted on Weibo.

  • New iPhone 12 MagSafe cases leak in Spring colors

New iPhone 12 MagSafe cases leak in Spring colors

The leak: Apple is preparing to release new colors for their Silicone cases with MagSafe, according to Uncle Pan (not yet tracked).

    • While five new colors are rumored to be coming, we get our first look at new blue, purple, green and peach colorways
    • The new cases are expected to come sometime this Spring, possibly at an Apple April event

Our take: Whenever we’re getting new products this month…it seems to be soon. I’ve never been this biggest fan of Apple’s cases though, so I’ll probably pass on these. Blue looks nice, however.
