  • New iMac, iPad Pro & Apple TV releasing on May 21

New iMac, iPad Pro & Apple TV releasing on May 21

The news: While Apple previously provided launch guidance of “available second half of May,” we now have the exact launch date.

    • The updated iMac, iPad Pro and Apple TV models all launch on Friday, May 21 (pre-orders go live tomorrow at 5am PST)
    • Apple hasn’t publicly confirmed the release date yet…but it leaked in the source page code for the UK press release (nice find, 9to5Mac!)

Our take: So the new products are just under a month away. Seems like pre-ordering this round will be the way to go because there have been wide concerns about supply for both iPad Pro and iMac…

  • iPad and Mac supply shortages expected in second half of 2021

iPad and Mac supply shortages expected in second half of 2021

The news: During Apple’s quarterly earnings call today, Tim Cook confirmed that two product lines would likely experience shortages in the second half of 2021 (via MacRumors).

    • “The constraints come from semiconductor shortages that are affecting many industries and it’s a combination of the shortages and the very high level of demand that we’re seeing for both ‌iPad‌ and Mac.” says Apple CFO Luca Maestri
    • We first heard of a rumored shortage last week, but even Apple doesn’t seem to be sure of the extent just yet

Our take: Apple didn’t specify what products exactly would be experiencing the shortage: just iPad and Mac broadly. Guessing this applies to the new 24-inch iMac…but again, not entirely sure yet. And Apple doesn’t seem to know exactly how bad it will be yet either.

  • New report suggests 11/12.9-inch M1 iPad Pros will launch at different times

New report suggests 11/12.9-inch M1 iPad Pros will launch at different times

The rumor: Apple is preparing a slightly staggered launch for the brand new iPad Pro lineup, according to Jon Prosser (77.8% accurate).

    • The 12.9-inch model may launch on Friday, May 21, with the 11-inch iPad Pro coming on Saturday, May 22
    • Apple traditionally launches new products on a Friday, so a Saturday launch would be notable

Our take: If anything, the new XDR display on the 12.9-inch would make me believe that model is coming after the 11-inch…not the other way around. Either way, Apple has publicly said a launch in the second half of May, so this (pretty much) lines up.

The wallpapers: Apple announced an all-new iPad Pro powered by M1 at their April 20 event and consequently released some slick new wallpaper.

    • There our four variants in this series that match up to the Space Gray and Silver variants of the 11/12.9-inch iPad Pro models
    • Even higher-res versions will be available once Apple releases the iOS 14.5 firmware for the new iPad Pro models

Apple announces new iPad Pro with 5G, M1 chip & major camera upgrades

The news: Apple just announced a new M1-powered iPad Pro at their April 20 event.

    • The 12.9-inch features a new MiniLED display
    • Switching from the A-series chips, iPad Pro now includes M1
    • 5G connectivity allows for faster speeds (mmWave US only)
    • Better cameras feature Smart HDR 3
    • New ultra-wide front-facing camera with CenterStage auto-centering technology
    • Liquid Retina XDR display on iPad Pro is similar to Pro Display XDR
    • New 2TB storage option
    • 11-inch starts at $799, 12.9-inch now $1,099
    • Ships in the second half of May

  • New 12.9-inch iPad Pro may get ~8% thicker due to new display

New 12.9-inch iPad Pro may get ~8% thicker due to new display

The rumor: One of the new iPad Pro models releasing tomorrow will be 0.5mm thicker, according to MacRumors (71.9% accurate).

    • The new dimensions are said to be 280.65 x 215 x 6.4mm, which means the updated 12.9-inch iPad Pro is getting 7.81% thicker
    • This change in thickness is reportedly due to the new MiniLED display, which is said to be a significant upgrade over current LCD technology

Our take: Considering how large the 12.9-inch iPad Pro already is, this is actually a pretty sizable depth increase. Perhaps this is why there are new Magic Keyboards coming?

  • Apple Stores may be preparing for a new product launch next week

Apple Stores may be preparing for a new product launch next week

The rumor: Apple Stores are gearing-up for a product launch next week, according to Jon Prosser (77.2% accurate).

    • Heard first on the Genius Bar podcast, Prosser says “Apple Stores are preparing for some sort of product release toward the end of next week”
    • Apple is widely expected to release a new iPad Pro with MiniLED, 5G, Thunderbolt and more in the second half of April

Our take: Prosser is yet another source who has heard that at least a new Apple product is coming next week. I think it’ll be the new iPad Pro…and I don’t think we’ll be seeing an April event…

  • New iPad Pro coming in second half of April due to display shortage

New iPad Pro coming in second half of April due to display shortage

The rumor: Apple’s first hardware announcement of 2021 is happening as soon as next week, according to Mark Gurman (89.1% accurate).

    • Although the supply of MiniLED displays has been constrained due to a shortage, the new iPad Pro is still on track to launch “as early as the second half of April”
    • However, Gurman notes “that the larger iPad Pro (could) ship later and be available in constrained quantities to begin with”
    • The new iPad Pro is rumored to have a faster processor like the M1 chip, new Thunderbolt port and better cameras

Our take: This confirms that Nikkei article from the other day and lines up with what every other good source has been reporting. Seems like we are getting the new iPad Pro sometime next week!

  • 2021 iPad Pro & iPad mini first look shows minor design tweaks

2021 iPad Pro & iPad mini first look shows minor design tweaks

The leak: Newly surfaced dummy units give us our first real-world look at new iPads coming soon, according to Sonny Dickson (57.7% accurate).

    • The new iPad Pro looks identical to the current generation, with virtually no design changes whatsoever…we’ve heard historically that the number of speaker holes is changing, though
    • As for the updated iPad mini, it’s not the full-screen redesign that many were hoping to see: Dickson says it’s just slighter thicker than the current generation (but with no explanation as to why)

Our take: This lines up with what other credible sources have said: no major design changes for iPad Pro or iPad mini this year. Everything new is happening on the inside.

  • Kang: New iPad Pro coming mid-April, Wi-Fi version may come first

Kang: New iPad Pro coming mid-April, Wi-Fi version may come first

The rumor: Apple’s next iPad Pro is coming in just days, according to Kang (97% accurate).

In a response to being asked about when the new tablet was coming, Kang provided the following details…

    • The tablet is releasing in the middle of the month (April)
    • The Wi-Fi-only iPad Pro is releasing ahead of the cellular version

Our take: This is, by far, Kang’s most cryptic post yet. It was created in response to being harassed about the device from some of his followers (don’t do that, if that is you). Seems like this new iPad is imminent…

  • 2021 iPad Pro sticker leaked, mysterious source says launch in mid-April

2021 iPad Pro sticker leaked, mysterious source says launch in mid-April

The leak: Apple’s new iPad Pros are coming in less than a month, according to Weibo user Uncle Pan (not yet tracked).

    • The sticker, which is usually placed on the rear of Apple accessories, says the unannounced accessory supports “iPad Pro 11-inch (1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation)…”
    • Jon Prosser (78.2% accurate) has previously said a new Magic Keyboard would be launching alongside the new iPad Pro models
    • In a reply on Weibo, Uncle Pan says the new tablets are coming in “mid-April”

Our take: While Uncle Pan is not a proven source just yet, this sticker seems to be legitimate and lines up with other credible reporting about a new iPad Pro (and updated Magic Keyboard) coming in April.
