New iMac likely coming in August, no redesign expected

The rumor: Apple is preparing to release an updated version of the iMac in the coming weeks, according to Jon Prosser (78.4% accurate).

    • Unlike previously rumored, the machines will not be redesigned
    • The new models are set to launch sometime in August

Our take: While product launches in August aren’t common at all…it’s clear that Apple’s hardware launches have been all over the place this year. I can’t say much more…but I think Prosser is dead right on this one.

  • Redesigned iMac, AirPods Studio and AirTags postponed from WWDC

Redesigned iMac, AirPods Studio and AirTags postponed from WWDC

The news: While a redesigned iMac is still on track for release later in 2020, it won’t be happening at WWDC, according to Jon Prosser (81.3% accurate).

    • Prosser believes any and all WWDC hardware has been scraped
      • This includes AirPods Studio and AirTags, too
    • Sonny Dickson (77.8% accurate) previously stated that a refreshed iMac with iPad Pro-like design would be announced on June 22

Our take: Especially with this WWDC being online-only, everything is a toss-up. Prosser has the slight edge on Dickson here, but Dickson has been leaking for much, much longer. I could see it go either way at this point.

  • iOS 14 may be called ‘iPhone OS’

iOS 14 may be called ‘iPhone OS’

The news: Just over 10 years after switching away from the iPhoneOS moniker, Apple may be reintroducing it at WWDC this year, according to Jon Prosser (86.7% accurate).

    • This would align the mobile operating system with every other major platform (ex. macOS, watchOS, tvOS)
    • iOS 14 is shaping up to be a smaller ‘S’ upgrade, similar to iOS 12

Our take: Shocking, but sensible. When you line every other platform up, there’s one outlier: iOS. Everything old really is new again.

  • iOS 14 may support 3rd-party Control Center widgets

iOS 14 may support 3rd-party Control Center widgets

The news: This year’s major iOS update may allow developers to add widgets to Control Center, as suggested by two sources.

Our take: With no credible sources recently reporting that home screen widgets are still in the cards for this year, perhaps the original widgets image was actually showing a revamped version of Control Center all along. This sounds most realistic to me, especially with all of the disruption that COIVD-19 caused.

  • Sources disagree on early ‘iPhone 13’ leaks

Sources disagree on early ‘iPhone 13’ leaks

The news: Jon Prosser and L0vetodream (both rated above 86 percent accurate) have shared their thoughts on the purported ‘iPhone 13’ prototype that recently surfaced.

    • Jon Prosser (86.7% accurate) says the 2021 iPhone will have the same optical design as this year’s iPhone 12 (three cameras + LiDAR)
    • L0vetodream (90.5% accurate) says the camera layout is changing next year

Our take: While both sources have a solid track record established…L0vetodream has a slight edge on Prosser here. Still, and regardless, and as stated before…it’s still way too early to know how next year’s phone will actually look. I’d put both sources at 50/50 at this point in time.

  • Apple may be working on special ‘Steve Jobs’ Apple Glass edition

Apple may be working on special ‘Steve Jobs’ Apple Glass edition

The news: In addition to a standard pair of glasses for the masses, Apple is also working on a more iconic variation, according to Jon Prosser.

    • Revealed to Cult of Mac, the special edition will look just like the glasses Steve Jobs was famed to wear (see image above)
    • The standard Apple Glass will look similar to wayfarer glasses

Our take: This is one of the rumors that gives rumors their name. It sounds ridiculous. It sounds exciting. And it sounds like something that dedicated Apple fans would freak over. I would be surprised if this ever actually came to market. But hey, Apple also made the $10,000 gold Apple Watch Edition, which is something I would also never believe if I heard it now.

  • Sources split on Apple Glass reveal

Sources split on Apple Glass reveal

The news: Jon Prosser and Mark Gurman, both highly rated between 83-87% accurate, don’t agree on when Apple will be releasing their AR glasses project.

    • Jon Prosser (86.7% accurate) says they’re coming in 2021, link
    • Mark Gurman (83.9% accurate) says the glasses “won’t launch till end of 2022 or 2023,” link

Our take: With ratings so close, it’s hard to say who’s right here. Gurman follows up with a suggestion that the product coming next year is actually a separate product: an AR/VR headset that Prosser could be confusing with the AR (only) glasses. Prosser says that’s not the case.
