The rumor: Apple is planning one more iteration of their most affordable iPad before redesigning the product in 2023, according to dylandkt (77.5% accurate).
Here are the leaked specs…
Same 10.2-inch design as current 9th-generation model
A14 processor
Bluetooth 5.0 & Wi-Fi 6
5G connectivity
Lightning port
Our take: Pretty cool that Apple updates its most popular iPad every year. I’d love to see the same yearly updates, even if it’s just a new processor, for other Apple products, too (ex. Mac Pro, HomePod mini, iPad Air). We’ve actually heard about this lower-end iPad redesign before, but it looks like the new timeline is a revamp sometime next year.
The design is said to be identical to the current 14-inch MacBook Pro, which features USB-C, MagSafe, HDMI and a SD card reader
Our take: It sounds like there will be a slight market gap between the redesigned M2 MacBook Air ~$999 and M1 Pro MacBook Pro $1,799…so Apple will be introducing a lower-end 14-inch MacBook Pro for $1,399. I’m just shocked that it will have the same design and ports as the higher-end 14-inch model. This actually sounds like a pretty compelling machine.
The news: Apple may be preparing to release new iPhones and iPads, according to Consomac.
References to 3 new iPhone models (A2595, A2783, A2784) and 11 new iPad models (A2436, A2588, A2696, A2759, A2437, A2589, A2591, A2757, A2761, A2766, A2777) appeared in the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC)
New Apple products are frequently revealed in the EEC prior to their release in the ensuing months
The rumor: Apple once planned a HomePod that wasn’t restricted to the home, according to Mark Gurman (87% accurate, via Power On).
“Years ago, Apple internally discussed and prototyped a battery-powered smart speaker, but I would be surprised if one ever launches under the Apple brand” Gurman says
Our take: Why Apple canceled this is beyond me. There are very few great Bluetooth speakers and I think Apple’s audio team could nail it. In the meantime, I’d recommend the Roam from Sonos.
Upgraded rear cameras will be “similar to the one from iPhone 13”
A faster chip will be included, too
Our take: As much as I think an all-glass tablet would look out-of-this-world cool…it would be quite heavy and extremely prone to damage. It sounds like Apple has abandoned plans for that and is eyeing a more toned down design update for 2022. Will the rumored larger battery mean we finally get more than 10 hours of advertised battery life on an iPad for the fist time?
The rumor: Apple’s first major product introduction since Apple Watch was set to take place at WWDC in June, but that might not happen anymore, according to Mark Gurman (87% accurate), Takashi Mochizuki and Debby Wu.
Apple is thinking about pushing the launch of the high-end AR/VR headset back “by at least a few months” due to “development challenges related to overheating, cameras and software”
The announcement may now take place closer to the end of the year, with the first units shipping in 2023
2 chips will power the headset and one is said to be as powerful as the M1 Pro processor in the latest MacBook Pros, adding to heating challenges
The cameras are said to have “also faced development challenges” but no other details are provided
Our take: It sounds like even years into development, Apple is still putting the polishing touches on this first-generation headset. I think a guarantee here is that it will be announced many months before it actually ships. Most interesting to me is how the heat issues were predicted in development…Apple’s initial approach was to put the processors in an external device that would transmit data wirelessly to the headset. But Jony Ive believed that was a poor experience so they integrated the chips directly in the headset. That sounds like the right call to me, even if it means waiting a bit longer for this one more thing.
120Hz ProMotion may be available across the board on all iPhone 14 models
All 2022 iPhones are also said to feature 6GB RAM (iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 only have 4GB)
Storage capacities may start at 64GB on iPhone 14 and 256GB on iPhone 14 Pro
Our take: I find this report sus for two reasons. First, if there was ever to be a feature limited to the pro iPhones, ProMotion would be it. The reason being that most folks don’t really notice the difference between 60 and 120Hz. So why would Apple put that on the default phones that most people will buy so quickly? Second, I don’t buy that the iPhone 14 will start at only 64GB of storage…considering that the current iPhone 13 starts at 128GB. It would be an odd look to downgrade storage year-over-year. I say all of this to say that Pu is roughly half right and half wrong overall.
Our take:What a day for iPhone 14 rumors. Touch ID returning to iPhone has been a rumor floating around for years now, but it doesn’t seem like Apple has cracked the under-display implementation yet. Until then, I’d be perfectly happy with Touch ID embedded in the power button (as seen on iPad Air and iPad mini), but it doesn’t look like Apple wants to go that route on iPhone for some reason.
The rumor: Apple is nixing the notch in favor of a dual-cutout design, according to Ross Young (100% accurate).
On iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple is apparently planning to place 2 cutouts in the display for the camera and Face ID array…rather than a larger single cutout to house them both as we’ve seen since iPhone X
Young specifically says that it will not be a single pill-shaped design as we have seen on Huawei phones
Our take: Well, I hate this. If anyone else, other than Young who is 100% accurate, said that Apple would be opting for a an off-center dual-cutout design…I just wouldn’t believe it. But, I have to considering his track record. So as of right now, this is the design…which actually leaked months ago from an account called ShrimpApplePro on Twitter.
We now believe Apple will have a hole + pill design on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models. The smaller hole will not be invisible…The two hole concept will be unique to Apple, like the notch, not similar to all the pill models from Huawei…Let's see those new renders pic.twitter.com/Udt8cTKzPZ
