Gurman: Mac Studio and new monitor coming at Peek Performance event tomorrow
The rumor: Apple will unveil an all-new Mac and monitor at their March 8 event, according to Mark Gurman (85.5% accurate).
- Mac Studio, the larger Mac-mini-style device, plus a new iOS-powered monitor are coming on March 8…as AppleTrack first told you hours ago
- We have heard the new monitor could measure in at around 27-inches diagonally, similar to the size of the current 27-inch iMac

New iPad Air may get M1 chip according to fresh rumor
The rumor: Apple is planning to put the popular M1 processor in the next iPad Air, according to 9to5Mac (82.4% accurate).
- “Based on information seen by 9to5Mac, iPad Air 5 (codenamed J408) will have the same M1 chip that Apple uses in the 2021 models of the iPad Pro”
- The new display will be the same resolution as the existing iPad Air (suggesting that the current 10.9-inch size will remain)
- 5G is definitely coming, too
Sam’s take: I wouldn’t believe this…but Apple has put Mac chips in iPads before. So, sure, if the iPad Air is getting M1, then I guess the new iPad Pro will get a M2 chip?

Exclusive: This is Mac Studio and Apple’s new display, coming at March 8 event
The exclusive: Following the first reports of an all-new desktop and monitor from Apple, AppleTrack is now sharing a first look at the upcoming devices.
- According to people familiar with the matter who spoke with Luke Miani, the Mac Studio resembles 2 Mac minis stacked on top of each other, with silver sides and a white top with rounded edges similar to the newest MacBook Pro models
- The people, who asked to remain unnamed, tell us Mac Studio is around the same footprint as the M1 Mac mini, but about 4 inches tall
- We’re told Mac Studio is accompanied by a new display, measuring roughly 27-inches diagonally, with a similar design to the Pro Display XDR (but it’ll have slightly thicker bezels and no circular lattice pattern on the rear)
- Both Mac Studio and the new display are scheduled to launch as early as tomorrow, March 8 at Apple’s event…but the company’s plans are historically fluid and subject to change
Luke Miani’s take: This exclusive reporting corroborates prior reports and adds more concrete information about the design. This new look carries on the Mac mini philosophy of minimalism, without eccentric milled aluminum holes like Mac Pro. Expect Mac Studio to feature a wide array of IO, with more USB-C ports than on the current M1 Mac mini. Based on the information we received, we are expecting the new Mac and display to launch at tomorrow’s “Peek Performance” Event.

Exclusive: New green iPhone 13 and purple iPad Air launching at March 8 event
The exclusive: Apple is preparing to launch new color options for iPad Air and iPhone 13, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke with Luke Miani.
- The people, who asked to remain anonymous, said Apple is bringing a new dark green color to iPhone 13…think somewhere between the Mint iPhone 12 and Midnight Green iPhone 11 Pro
- A refreshed iPad Air will also launch this week in a new purple color, similar to what is available on the current iPad mini
Luke Miani’s take: This exclusive reporting covers some of the updates we can expect to see tomorrow, and I’m very confident in its accuracy. We can add this information to what others have heard about the refreshed iPad Air already: A15 chip, 5G support and Center Stage are also expected. As for the iPhone 13, don’t expect any updates beside color: this is basically what happened at last year’s Spring Loaded event, when Apple added a new Purple iPhone 12 with no other changes.

Apple rumored to release new 30W GaN charger later this year
The rumor: Apple will be releasing their second gallium nitride (GaN) charger in 2022, according to Ming-Chi Kuo (70.4% accurate).
- GaN technology, which allows chargers to pack more watts in a smaller form factor and run cooler, is said to debut in a redesigned 30W charger later this year
- Apple’s only GaN charger currently is the 140W USB-C power adapter that ships with the newest 16-inch MacBook Pro
Sam’s take: Charger news isn’t generally too exciting. But Apple’s current selection of power adapters is severely outdated compared to what third parties like Spigen are doing with their chargers (full disclosure: I work with Spigen regularly and love their stuff). GaN is simply better across the board and I look forward to Apple selling some more first party stuff with it soon.

New rumor says updated Mac mini and external display coming this year, new iMac Pro and Mac Pro in 2023
The rumor: Apple will be updating their lower-end Mac desktops in 2022 and higher-end Mac offerings in 2023, according to Ming-Chi Kuo (70.4% accurate).
- Later this year: Apple is said to release a “more powerful Mac mini and more affordable external display” that is a 27-inch non-Mini-LED panel
- 2023: The iMac Pro and Mac Pro are said to be updated
Sam’s take: There’s not much detail about why these Macs may be launching so far apart…and it event contradicts with Apple’s own timeline of the transition to Apple Silicon being complete by the end of 2022. But Kuo also tends to know things very far in the future, and the first half of his tweet lines up with what other sources have been saying.

Apple’s new external display is finished and could launch at any time
The rumor: A new display from Apple could be dropping sooner rather than later, according to Mark Gurman (85.5% accurate, via Power On).
The details on Apple’s new monitor…
- “I’m told Apple actually completed work on it months ago, and the device was due to launch soon after last year’s MacBook Pro. Apple’s last in-house monitor came in 2019 alongside the Intel Mac Pro” Gurman says
- Evidence of a new Apple Studio Display was first revealed by 9to5Mac just days ago…the device is said to feature a 7K resolution and A13 chip
Sam’s take: It certainly sounds like Gurman thinks there’s a good chance that this monitor could be shown at Apple’s March 8 event. And if he feels that way…then I do, too. This is incredibly exciting.
