Gurman: iPhone Fold still ‘two or three years’ away

The rumor: Apple is actively working on a foldable iPhone, but it won’t be coming anytime soon, according to Mark Gurman (89.1% accurate, via Power On).

    • On the topic of an iPhone that folds, “I think Apple will eventually do it, but it’ll be at least two or three years. I reported earlier this year that Apple has prototyped foldable iPhones, and personally, I think an iPhone with a giant, unfolding 7- or 8-inch screen would be the perfect device for me and a lot of other people” Gurman says
    • Numerous sources have suggested that this ‘iPhone Fold’ is in the works, but have also indicated that it is some time away still

Our take: I’m still not sold on foldable phones as I’ve yet to be impressed by anything I’ve seen on the market so far. Broadly, I think they’re a gimmick for people that are bored of the traditional smartphone design—and while I get that—it’s not for me. I think Apple will have to come up with a killer design and feature set to make something like this gain mass appeal.

Second rumor suggests AirPods 3 releasing in September alongside iPhone 13

The rumor: Apple will be unveiling a new version of AirPods alongside the 2021 iPhones, according to dylandkt (81.3% accurate).

Our take: I was skeptical about the first rumor, but Dylan seems to have release timeframes down pretty well for new products. Looks like we may be seeing AirPods 3 in just under 2 months…

What’s new in iOS 15 beta 4? More Safari tweaks, MagSafe Battery Pack support & more

The news: Following the private and public beta release of iOS 15 beta 4, these are the changes you should know about.

    • TL;DR: Safari continues to get better, the new MagSafe battery is now properly supported, and there’s more granular options you can configure across the OS

    What’s new?

    • iPadOS’ Safari now looks very close to macOS Monterey and gives you the ability to select your tab bar style
    • Ability to share/not share Focus Status on a contact-by-contact basis

  • 2022 iPhones may have new titanium chassis…on Pro models

2022 iPhones may have new titanium chassis…on Pro models

The rumor: Apple may be adding an even more premium chassis on Pro iPhones next year, according to a new investor report from JP Morgan Chase (not yet tracked, via MacRumors).

    • Apple may be adding a titanium chassis on 2022 Pro iPhone models, a pricey material that Apple has only used on some Apple Watch models and Apple Card
    • Pro iPhones currently feature shiny and heavy stainless steel for a more premium look at feel over the aluminum found on lower-end iPhones

Our take: This is really interesting…but we have no idea how credible this really is as JP Morgan Chase rarely puts out new reports. I think it’s absolutely plausible, but I actually really like the reflective look of stainless steel now. I also just learned that titanium is also roughly 35x more expensive than stainless steel…so it would be a way for Apple to entice more users to upgrade to Pro.

  • ‘iMac Pro’ with Apple Silicon may not launch until 2022

‘iMac Pro’ with Apple Silicon may not launch until 2022

The rumor: Apple is not updating the 27-inch iMac to Apple Silicon until sometime next year, according to dylandkt (81.3% accurate).

    • The larger iMac delay reportedly comes because Apple doesn’t want the 2021 M1X products to complete for attention and due to other delays in product releases
    • Apple’s next ‘iMac Pro’ could have a screen larger than 30 inches and an M1X or M2 chip inside

Our take: While this is super disappointing as someone who was planning to use this larger iMac as my main computer, at least we are getting some M1X devices later this year. A redesigned iMac, Mac mini and MacBook Pro launching at once would definitely be a lot, and Dylan definitely makes a good point in his tweet below.

  • Gurman: Most iPhones, iPads and Macs will get Face ID ‘within a couple of years’

Gurman: Most iPhones, iPads and Macs will get Face ID ‘within a couple of years’

The rumor: Apple is planning to add Face ID to most of their products over time, according to Mark Gurman (89.1% accurate).

    • “I’d bet Face ID on the Mac is coming within a couple of years. I expect all iPhones and iPads to transition to Face ID within that timeframe, too” Gurman says
    • Apple first unveiled Face ID in late 2017 on iPhone X, and has since expanded it to iPad Pro

Our take: I think Face ID makes the most sense on Mac and iPad, but I think a hybrid of Touch ID and Face ID on iPhone would be the best solution, long-term. That was supposed to happen on iPhone 13, but it looks like Apple has delayed the change…

  • Apple’s September 2021 event will again be virtual

Apple’s September 2021 event will again be virtual

The rumor: Apple isn’t ready to resume in-person gatherings just yet, according to Mark Gurman (89.1% accurate, via Power On).

    • “If all Apple employees were back in the office as originally planned, and if cases of infections were low, it’d be plausible to think Apple would be gearing up for its first in-person product event since 2019. Instead, expect another promotional video on Apple’s website and YouTube, plus a focus on online sales” Gurman says
    • Apple always holds an event each September to unveil new products, traditionally consisting of iPhone and apple Watch upgrades

Our take: I definitely think it’s safe to have a small, in-person gathering if employees and members of the media have been vaccinated and wear facial coverings. But considering that Apple recently delayed return-to-office plans, it doesn’t seem like they have any intention to do something other than another digital event. These digital events have been incredibly well-received, so is it possible that Apple never returns to their traditional format?

  • Apple Pro Display XDR 2 may feature A13 chip & neural engine

Apple Pro Display XDR 2 may feature A13 chip & neural engine

The rumor: Apple is working on a follow-up to their existing high-end display that will be as powerful as an iPhone 11, according to 9to5Mac (78.7% accurate, source).

    • To assist with more intensive tasks, an Apple-designed A13 processor may be inlaced on the next Pro Display XDR…alongside a neural engine
    • Apple first introduced the Pro Display XDR in June 2019 at WWDC alongside the revamped Mac Pro
    • No release date for Apple’s next high-end XDR display is known

Our take: Was really hoping this would be for the rumored lower-end consumer display that is in the works. But for those waiting for a second Pro Display XDR, these upgrades sound incredible and I’m glad to see Apple working to add more value to the five thousand dollar behemoth.

  • AirPods 3 may debut alongside iPhone 13 at September event

AirPods 3 may debut alongside iPhone 13 at September event

The rumor: Apple may be releasing new AirPods this Fall, according to DigiTimes (63.5% accurate, source).

Our take: Keep in mind this is coming from DigiTimes, so take it with a grain of salt. But it seems like AirPods 3 may be just around the corner.

  • iPhone 13 could support faster 25W charging

iPhone 13 could support faster 25W charging

The rumor: Apple may again be upgrading the charging speed on the new iPhones this year, according to MyDrivers, who historically has a poor track record.

    • iPhone 13 could support 25W charging, faster than the 20W charging that is currently supported
    • The only other MyDrivers rumors we have ever covered have been relatively inaccurate

Our take: As sketchy as MyDrivers’ track record has been thus far…this isn’t too hard to believe. A minor increase of 5W doesn’t sound too unrealistic and would certainly add to the (small) list of iPhone 13 upgrades.
