The news: Apple just released the largest update to iOS 14 yet with Fitness+ support bundled alongside a slew of other changes.

The highlights:
- Apple Fitness+ is a new subscription fitness service for $9.99/mo of $79.99/yr that works with your Apple Watch to track metrics while you exercise
- AirPods Max, coming on December 15, are supported in this latest release
- Apple ProRaw for iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max enables you to shoot in RAW, natively, for the first time ever on an iPhone

Safari
- Ecosia search engine option in Safari

Apple Fitness+ launching on December 14
The news: Apple confirmed that Apple Fitness+ is still on track to launch before the end of the year, as previewed earlier.
- Fitness+, Apple’s exercise subscription service, releases on December 14 for $9.99/month or $79.99/year
- iOS 14.3 is required to run Fitness+, which means the software will be launching sometime in the next 6 days
Our take: As someone who has been wanting to stay in shaped but has struggled throughout the pandemic, I’m incredibly excited to try out Fitness+.

The news: Apple seeded the third beta of iOS 14.3 to developers on Wednesday morning.
- Previous betas included support for scanning app clips, Apple ProRaw photography and better support for skinned app icons
- This update also seemingly supports two unreleased products: AirPods Studio and AirTags

iOS 14.2.1 released for iPhone 12 only with MMS text & lock screen touch fixes
The news: Apple just released iOS 14.2.1 in order to address a number of launch issues for iPhone 12 models.
- Fixes for unreceived MMS messages, hearing devices and Lock Screen responsiveness have all been addressed
- The update is only available for iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max

AirPods Studio icon appears in first iOS 14.3 beta
The news: A closer look at the design of AirPods Studio has been discovered in iOS 14.3 by 9to5Mac (77.2% accurate).
- The image lines up with what the rumors have suggested: a headband connected to earpads by metal arms
- AirPods Studio aren’t coming out until March of 2021, according to Jon Prosser (82.4% accurate)
Our take: Honestly, these look a bit odd. Maybe it’s just the shading and such in the icon, but they look a bit cartoon-esque to me.

What’s new in iOS 14.3 beta 1 (update: available again)
The news: Apple released, and then pulled, iOS 14.3 twice today. Why? Because a number of details about future products have been revealed.

Here’s everything that’s new so far, according to 9to5Mac and MacRumors, who were able to install the update:
- Support for scanning App Clips with the camera
- New Pregnancy section in Health
- On iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, support for Apple ProRaw
- Support for PS5 and Luna controllers
- Install HomeKit accessory updates directly through the Home app
- Ecosia added as a default search engine option
  - As described on their website ‘Make Ecosia your new search engine and plant trees with your searches – for free!’

iOS 14.2 released with new wallpapers, emojis & more
The news: Apple just released iOS 14.2 with a slew of new features in the biggest update to iOS 14 thus far.
- There are a ton of new wallpapers
- New emojis include disguised face, bubble tea and ninja
- Bug fixes are plentiful, as well
What’s new?

iOS 14.2 includes the following improvements for your iPhone:
- Over 100 new emoji, including animals, food, faces, household objects, musical instruments, gender-inclusive emoji, and more
- Eight new wallpapers in both light and dark mode versions
- Magnifier can detect people nearby, and report their distance using the LiDAR sensor included in iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max
- Support for iPhone 12 Leather Sleeve with MagSafe
- Optimized battery charging for AirPods to slow the rate of battery aging by reducing the time your AirPods spends fully charged
- Headphone audio level notifications to alert you when audio level could impact your hearing
- New AirPlay controls to stream entertainment throughout your home
- Intercom support with HomePod and HomePod mini using iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods, and CarPlay
- Ability to connect HomePod to Apple TV 4K for stereo, surround sound, and Dolby Atmos audio

- Apps could be out of order on the Home Screen dock
- Camera viewfinder may appear black when launched

- Next-hour precipitation chart description in Weather could incorrectly indicate when precipitation stops

iOS 14.2 brings optimized charging to AirPods for the first time
The news: Updating to iOS 14.2 could have a positive impact on your AirPods battery life in the long-term, according to an important change mentioned in the official release notes.
- As described by Apple, “Optimized battery charging for AirPods to slow the rate of battery aging by reducing the time your AirPods spends fully charged”
- Battery degradation was a big issue for owners of original AirPods, as the batteries inside each earbud (and even the charging case) are so tiny
- Apple first introduced optimized battery charging for iPhone with iOS 13
Our take: Super happy that this is here, because I have experienced, first-hand, huge issues with AirPods battery life after holding onto them for a couple of years.

iOS 14.2 adds support for iPhone 12 leather sleeve case, coming soon?
The news: Apple confirmed in the release notes for iOS 14.2 that special functionality for iPhone 12’s leather sleeve has been enabled.
- The leather sleeve case is not (yet) available for sale, but appears to enable an always-on-display mode for a small portion of the display, viewable through a window in the case
- Apple first showcased the leather sleeve case for iPhone 12 at the October 13 event
Our take: Support for the leather sleeve case in this update definitely suggests that it’ll be available to order soon. Maybe next Friday (November 6) when pre-orders for iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max start?

iOS 14.2 GM released ahead of public launch, read the full changelog
The news: Apple seeded the final version of iOS 14.2 to developers on Friday afternoon.
- iOS 14.2 includes over 100 new emoji, new wallpapers, revamped now playing UIs, native Shazam integration and more
- There’s no official launch date for iOS 14.2 just yet, but a GM release indicates it’s happening soon
Our take: The refreshed now playings views in iOS 14.2 are amazing. Plus, the 100+ new emoji are slick.

iOS 14.2 beta 4 includes 16 new wallpapers, download them here
The fun: Included in the release of iOS 14.2 beta 4 are a crop of new wallpapers that are quite a bit different from what Apple normally includes in updates.
- There are drawn and real-life wallpapers available that include light and dark mode variants, with 16 total new images available to choose from
- The wallpapers break from Apple’s standard operating procedure and are reminiscent of photo wallpapers from iOS 4 to iOS 10
Our take: These are genuinely interesting because they feel so…I don’t know…random? Listen, I’m all for new wallpapers from Apple. But these don’t seem to follow and clear rhyme of reason…
