iPhone 13 reportedly on schedule for late September launch

The rumor: At least some of Apple’s 2021 iPhones won’t be launching as late as the iPhone 12 lineup, according to Wedbush Securities (78.6% accurate, via 9to5Mac).

    • The new phones may be coming as soon as the third week of September 2021, but Wedbush notes that “product model tweaks” could push some models to early October
    • Apple launched iPhone 12 in October 2020, a break from the usual September release that started with iPhones 4S in 2011

Our take: All signs are pointing to the usual September release for at least some of the 2021 iPhones. This makes sense, of course, because the pandemic is finally coming to a close.

  • iPhone 13 may get 120Hz display, new ultra-wide lens & larger batteries

iPhone 13 may get 120Hz display, new ultra-wide lens & larger batteries

The rumor: Apple is planning a handful of upgrades for the 2021 iPhones, according to a new report from Ming-Chi Kuo (78.2% accurate).

Here’s the latest (new info is bolded):

    • Same 5.4/6.1/6.7-inch displays but now with LTPO 120Hz support
    • Upgraded ultra-wide angle camera with new 6 element ƒ/1.8 lens
    • All models will be slightly heavier due to larger internal batteries
    • USB-C not coming this year
    • LiDAR only on Pro models

Our take: If you had to pick a weak point for iPhone 12, I would definitely consider it to be the battery life. It’s good right now, but I’m ready for it to be great. We just haven’t seen much mobile battery innovation from Apple in recent history.

  • iPhone 13 may get always-on display, stronger MagSafe & Portrait Mode for video

iPhone 13 may get always-on display, stronger MagSafe & Portrait Mode for video

The rumor: Apple is planning a number of notable upgrades for the iPhone 13 series, according to Max Weinbach (67.1% accurate, via EAP).

    • 3 impressive camera upgrades: new astrophotography mode, upgraded higher-quality ultra-wide lens and Portrait Mode for video(!)
    • Always-on display: the clock, battery level and minimalistic notifications are said to be shown at all times
    • Stronger MagSafe magnets will be placed in the chassis to improve the attraction of accessories

Our take: An always-on display would be so incredibly nice to finally see on iPhone! And as a huge fan of MagSafe, stronger magnets on the 2021 iPhones would make some accessories like the wallet attach more securely. I’m still highly skeptical about Portrait Mode for video coming this year, though.

  • All iPhone 13 models may get upgraded ultra-wide lens, more

All iPhone 13 models may get upgraded ultra-wide lens, more

The rumor: Apple is planning significant upgrades to the auxiliary lenses across iPhone 13 models, according to Barclays (64.7% accurate, via MacRumors).

    • All iPhone 13 models may get an upgraded ultra-wide lens with ƒ/1.8 aperture (currently ƒ/2.2), which will allow more light inside for better-looking photos
    • iPhone 13 Pro is also said to be getting the telephoto lens upgrades currently found on iPhone 12 Pro Max, with a 2.5x optical zoom and ƒ/2.2 aperture

Our take: I’m consistently disappointed in many of the photos I take on the current ultra-wide camera, as there’s almost always some level of grain present even in moderate lighting. This upgraded aperture won’t eliminate that entirely, but will be a significant move forward.

  • Second rumor echoes ‘shorter’ iPhone 13 notch design

Second rumor echoes ‘shorter’ iPhone 13 notch design

The rumor: Apple is taking a different kind of approach to shrinking the notch on the 2021 iPhones, according to Jon Prosser (79.2% accurate).

    • Rather than moving inward, the notch may simply be moving upward on iPhone 13 (same width but shorter)
    • This echoes an earlier report from IceUniverse, who also reported that this would be the design

Our take: While I certainly don’t want this as much as a skinnier notch design, this is a step in the right direction. If I’m being honest, this change feels subtle, and I could definitely see Apple moving forward this way.

  • iPhone 13 Pro models may get 1TB storage

iPhone 13 Pro models may get 1TB storage

The rumor: Apple will be doubling the max capacity of iPhone storage in 2021, according to Jon Prosser (79.2% accurate).

    • A number of early prototypes reportedly feature 1TB internal storage, the highest maximum capacity in iPhone history
    • If and when we ever see this capacity land on iPhone, Prosser says it will be limited to Pro models…due to a hefty price tag

Our take: I’ve heard privately that 1TB is not coming to the iPhone anytime soon. But sure, it’s possible.

  • Sensor-shift stabilization may come to all iPhone 13 models

Sensor-shift stabilization may come to all iPhone 13 models

The rumor: Apple may be expanding one of the most impressive features on iPhone 12 Pro Max to more models in 2021, according to DigiTimes (65.1% accurate).

    • Sensor-shift stabilization works to minimize shakiness by steading the entire camera sensor, not just the lens
    • DigiTimes says that sensor-shift stabilization will come to all iPhone 13 models in 2021

Our take: Sensor-shift stabilization is, by far, the most impressive camera upgrades in years. Video has been the best on iPhone for as long as I can remember, and this will keep things competitive.

  • iPhone 13 to be ‘S’ upgrade, in-screen fingerprint reader & no ports in testing

iPhone 13 to be ‘S’ upgrade, in-screen fingerprint reader & no ports in testing

The rumor: Apple is planning an ‘S’ year upgrade for the 2021 iPhones, according to Mark Gurman (89.1% accurate).

    • The new in-screen fingerprint scanner (supplied by Qualcomm) will likely be used in tandem with Face ID
    • Apple is also testing some models with no charging port, in favor of exclusively wireless charging

Our take: Good to hear both of these are on the table this year from Gurman, who is the source I trust the most. Although there may not be as many upgrades on the phones this year, I’m personally stoked for Touch ID to make a comeback.

  • iPhone 13 may be slighter thicker, ‘thinner’ notch expected

iPhone 13 may be slighter thicker, ‘thinner’ notch expected

The rumor: A new report about the iPhone 13’s design has surfaced, courtesy of Macotakara (68.6% accurate).

    Here are the 4 takeaways:

    • While the overall design will be the same, some models may be 0.26 mm thicker (width and height are said to remain unchanged)
    • The camera module will get roughly 0.9mm larger on all iPhone 13 models, but the lenses won’t stick out as much
    • On iPhone 13 Pro, the upgraded camera module will likely mirror the benefits seen on the Pro Max model…including sensor-shift stabilization on the wide-angle lens
    • The Face ID array is getting “thinner,” which lines up with an earlier rumor

Our take: All of this sounds great. Sure, a thicker phone isn’t great…but Apple has done this time in time again after updating the design in the prior year. Plus, it probably means they’ll be able to fit larger batteries inside.

iPhone 13 (2021) rumors and leaks

Expected to launch in September 2021, iPhone 13 will likely feature the same boxy design of iPhone 12. 4 new models, including even better 5.4, 6.1 and 6.7-inch displays, are set to be unveiled and Touch ID could make a big comeback. Here’s everything we know about iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro so far.

  • iPhone 13 may support Wi-Fi 6E

    iPhone 13 may support Wi-Fi 6E

The rumor: Apple may significantly upgrade the wireless capabilities on the iPhone 13 lineup, according to Barclays (64.7% accurate, spotted by MacRumors).

    • Wi-Fi 6E is broadcast on the 6GHz spectrum: for years, Wi-Fi has been limited to only 2.4/5Ghz frequencies
    • Wi-Fi Alliance describes Wi-Fi 6E as “higher performance, lower latency, and faster data rates – extended into the 6 GHz band”

Our take: Many analysts are projecting that the first consumer applications of 6E will be in smartphones. Apple is pretty quick to adopt this stuff, so I think we’ll see it in the 2021 iPhones.
