  • New AirPods & iMacs not expected to launch in March

New AirPods & iMacs not expected to launch in March

The rumor: Apple won’t be releasing new AirPods or iMac models in March, according to Jon Prosser (78.2% accurate).

Our take: The more I think about next month’s products, the more it feels like Apple will hold a mini keynote similar to the three Fall events laster. Main product unveil + accessory seems to be a trend for them.

  • AirTags reportedly on schedule to launch in March

AirTags reportedly on schedule to launch in March

The rumor: Apple may finally be releasing AirTags in just around a month, according to Jon Prosser (79.2% accurate).

    • AirTags are currently expected at a to-be-announced event in March
    • A new iPad Pro and new Macs are also rumored to be dropping at the special event

Our take: While I’m skeptical of any release for AirTags at this point, Apple has pushed these back long enough and with vaccine distribution beginning to ramp up, it seems like an okay time to launch the product. But I don’t see travel broadly going back to normal levels for a number of months still.

  • ‘iPhone Flip’ design likely, may be available in numerous colors

‘iPhone Flip’ design likely, may be available in numerous colors

The rumor: Apple’s internal teams are pushing ahead on a foldable iPhone with a clamshell flip design, according to Jon Prosser (79.2% accurate).

    • While both flip and fold designs have been in testing, Apple’s focus has reportedly shifted to the flip-phone design
    • The foldable iPhone is also said to come in multiple colors, suggesting that this device will be targeted a more general audience

Our take: I definitely see Apple settling on one design, and this report from Prosser solidifies that mentality. Still, I’m highly skeptical that a folding iPhone from Apple will ever release, because it just doesn’t feel like something that they would do. Something about a folding phone feels cheap, regardless of the price tag.

  • Second rumor echoes ‘shorter’ iPhone 13 notch design

Second rumor echoes ‘shorter’ iPhone 13 notch design

The rumor: Apple is taking a different kind of approach to shrinking the notch on the 2021 iPhones, according to Jon Prosser (79.2% accurate).

    • Rather than moving inward, the notch may simply be moving upward on iPhone 13 (same width but shorter)
    • This echoes an earlier report from IceUniverse, who also reported that this would be the design

Our take: While I certainly don’t want this as much as a skinnier notch design, this is a step in the right direction. If I’m being honest, this change feels subtle, and I could definitely see Apple moving forward this way.

  • iPhone 13 Pro models may get 1TB storage

iPhone 13 Pro models may get 1TB storage

The rumor: Apple will be doubling the max capacity of iPhone storage in 2021, according to Jon Prosser (79.2% accurate).

    • A number of early prototypes reportedly feature 1TB internal storage, the highest maximum capacity in iPhone history
    • If and when we ever see this capacity land on iPhone, Prosser says it will be limited to Pro models…due to a hefty price tag

Our take: I’ve heard privately that 1TB is not coming to the iPhone anytime soon. But sure, it’s possible.

  • 2021 iPad Pro may release in March

2021 iPad Pro may release in March

The rumor: Apple plans to update the iPad Pro within the next three months, according to Jon Prosser (79.2% accurate).

    • Apple may update the iPad Pro line as soon as March: Prosser has also said that this is when Apple will hold their next special event
    • Rumors suggest the next iPad Pro will feature a mini-LED display and 5G connectivity

Our take: Apple is known to release a new product or two in March. An iPad Pro update then feels right to me.

  • AirTags shown in new 360º video, likely coming in Spring

AirTags shown in new 360º video, likely coming in Spring

The leak: Our first holistic look at AirTags has been shared by Jon Prosser (79.2% accurate).

    • Similar to previously shared renders, the new 360-degree video provides a level of depth
    • This animation could be displayed to a user when setting up AirTags for the first time
    • Prosser says AirTags are likely, finally releasing sometime this Spring

Our take: This matches up with what Prosser has shared previously regarding AirTags, and considering he nailed the design of AirPods Max ahead of launch, I’d say these are spot on. Now we just continuing waiting for them to drop.

  • AirPods Max ‘Sport’ variant could launch at a later date

AirPods Max ‘Sport’ variant could launch at a later date

The rumor: While Apple recently launched their highest-end AirPods Max offering, a lower-cost model may also be in the pipeline.

    • Over the past few months, both Mark Gurman (89.1% accurate) and Jon Prosser (79.2% accurate) reported on Apple developing a lower-cost ‘Sport’ variant, made of cheaper materials that would be better for activities like working out
    • This sport model, and other features like reversibility and interchangeable head bands, were cut in an effort to get AirPods Max out the door before the end of the year

Our take: I think that Apple should’ve started here before going full-send on a $549 model. A physically lighter sport version, for $349, would be significantly more appealing to me.

  • Working iPhone 13 prototypes reportedly have Touch ID under-the-display

Working iPhone 13 prototypes reportedly have Touch ID under-the-display

The rumor: Apple is moving forward with the development of a reinvented version of Touch ID, according to Jon Prosser (79.2% accurate).

    • 2 functional iPhone 13 prototypes in testing are said to have under-screen Touch ID right now
    • Prosser notes that the presence of a feature on an early prototype does not guarantee that it will ship on the final product next year
    • That being said, other sources have also stated that Touch ID will make a comeback soon

Our take: Could definitely see this and 120Hz being reserved for the Pro models next year. This would be a big reason for me to upgrade.

  • Rumors persist of portless iPhone 13 model

Rumors persist of portless iPhone 13 model

The rumor: Apple is preparing to radically shift how an iPhone can be charged, according to Jon Prosser (82.4% accurate).

    • At least one 2021 iPhone will likely have no ports at all, with MagSafe becoming the primary charging method
    • Apple reportedly plans to start small and remove Lightning from more devices over time
    • Other iPhone 13 rumors include a 120Hz display and more

Our take: This has been coming for years, and I think it’s incredibly smart that Apple does not plan to go portless all at once. One of my friends (hey Sarah!) just texted me the other day expressing concern about MagSafe, so it would absolutely be a mistake to force everyone to jump ship on day one.

  • AirPower is reportedly, actually, finally dead

AirPower is reportedly, actually, finally dead

The rumor: After rumors reignited a few months back about AirPower still being worked on at Apple, Jon Prosser (85.5% accurate) has provided an update on the state of the project.

    • AirPower’s development has apparently been ‘removed from the schedule for 2021.’
    • Prosser adds that sources he’s spoken with have low confidence in any future revival
    • Prior leaks suggested Apple was still problem-solving the canceled product

Our take: As soon as I saw MagSafe announced earlier this month, I knew AirPower’s fate in my heart. The idea—a mat where you can just lay your stuff on it (anywhere) and it’s fully charged the next day—is beautiful. And AirPower was beautiful. But it’s time to move on to MagSafe, which is entirely different, but still cool enough.
