New video may show Apple Pencil 3, launch next week?

The leaks: Apple may be preparing to launch a new Apple Pencil soon, according to some fresh leaks from UnclePan (not yet tracked) and 漢尼斯·拉斯納 (not yet tracked).

    • UnclePan recently suggested a launch for the new Apple Pencil would happen soon
    • A new leaked video from an anonymous source below claims to show the updated Apple Pencil with a glossy finish
    • This mirrors a similar leak from Mr.white last month, who posted the image above

Our take: Because all of this info comes from two unverified sources, I’m highly skeptical of all of this. But an updated Apple Pencil would complement the iPad Pro refresh nicely.

  • Gurman: Apple’s April 20 Spring Loaded event won’t be ‘particularly innovative’

Gurman: Apple’s April 20 Spring Loaded event won’t be ‘particularly innovative’

The rumor: Apple won’t be unveiling anything at their April 20 event that “we haven’t seen before,” according to Mark Gurman (89.1% accurate).

    • “Nothing that you’re going to be seeing next week is going to be particularly innovative, in my humble opinion,” Gurman says…but notes an iMac launch at the event would change his mind
    • New products expected on April 20 include a new MiniLED iPad Pro with 5G, AirTags and potentially a new iMac with Apple Silicon inside

Our take: It seems Gurman is still split on whether or not the new iMac is coming on Tuesday…even tweaking his verbiage about innovation to say, ‘well, I won’t be impressed unless it comes out.’ I think this is mostly fair, but I don’t know of any MiniLED tablets on the market currently: the improved contrast ratio will surely be stunning.

  • What new products are coming at Apple’s April 20 ‘Spring Loaded’ event?

What new products are coming at Apple’s April 20 ‘Spring Loaded’ event?

The rumors: Ahead of Apple’s first hardware event of 2021, here are all the products we will and won’t be seeing announced on April 20.

    100% likely

    • New iPad Pro: MiniLED display on 12.9-inch tablet, 5G, M1-like processor, upgraded cameras and, maybe, a new Apple Pencil(?)
    • Spring colors for iPhones cases and watch bands: Amethyst, Cantaloupe, Capri Blue and Pistachio are the rumored new colors

    More than 50% likely

    • AirTags: Apple’s ultra-wideband (UWB) item finding accessory that’s just a bit larger than a bottle cap, integrated directly with the Find My network
    • Redesigned iMac: M1 processor inside, five different colors, flat back and ultra-thin bezels

    Unlikely at this event

    • Updated Apple TV, AirPods 3, other new Mac models…these are all expected to come later in 2021
  • Apple eliminating 5.4-inch iPhone mini size by next year

Apple eliminating 5.4-inch iPhone mini size by next year

The rumor: Apple’s iPhone sizes will be 5.4-inches shorter by 2022, according to Ming-Chi Kuo (76.6% accurate).

    • In a new research note, Kuo says that only 6.1 and 6.7-inch models will be offered in 2022, which would make the lineup look something like this:
      • iPhone 14: 6.1-inch
      • iPhone 14 Max: 6.7-inch
      • iPhone 14 Pro: 6.1-inch
      • iPhone 14 Pro Max: 6.7-inch
    • The 2022 iPhones are also rumored to feature a punch hole design and upgraded cameras

Our take: With extremely sluggish sales, this is no surprise at all. I’m quite shocked that we’re getting an iPhone 13 mini this year, all things considered. I have iPhone 12 mini and it’s a great phone! But it’s far too small for me.

  • First look at iPhone 13 Pro design shows larger cameras and thicker body

First look at iPhone 13 Pro design shows larger cameras and thicker body

The leak: Our first look at iPhone 13 Pro has been leaked by 91Mobiles (not yet tracked, but accurate in the past).

    • A larger camera module, that looks identical to iPhone 12 Pro Max module, may be making its way to the 6.1-inch Pro model this year
    • Dimensions are also changing a bit: 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.6 mm, compared to 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.4mm (that’s 2.63% thicker)
    • There’s also redesigned, skinnier notch with the speaker relocated to the bezel

Our take: Just like the 6.1-inch iPhone 13 first look from yesterday, not a whole lot of changes this year. Very good news that the notch is shrinking, and the thickness change will probably be unnoticeable.

  • First look at iPhone 13 design shows new camera setup and smaller notch

First look at iPhone 13 design shows new camera setup and smaller notch

The leak: Apple’s 5.4 and 6.1-inch iPhone models in 2021 will make a number of changes to the iPhone 12 design, according to MySmartPrice (100% accurate for 4 rumors).

    • After years of stagnation, the notch is finally shrinking horizontally…and MySmartPrice speculates that there could be two front-facing cameras
    • On the rear cameras, Apple has adopted a new pattern for the dual-camera setup: but there’s no LiDAR sensor as some sources rumored
    • The dimensions of the iPhone 13 will be identical to iPhone 12: 146.7×71.5×7.6mm

Our take: I don’t buy the dual front-facing cameras that is speculated in this piece, but I do dig the new camera look on the back. It’s a subtle change but it really makes the design look fresh, even though it’s just a minor revision to iPhone 12.

Apple officially announces ‘Spring Loaded’ April 20 event

The news: After months of anticipation and speculation, Apple’s first hardware launch of 2021 is official.

    • The event is taking place at 10am PST at Apple Park on April 20, and will be a pre-recorded event like those in 2020
    • Apple is expected to unveil AirTags and a new iPad Pro at the minimum, but AirPods or iMac are also possible

Our take: The artwork, as always, is fantastic. Apple knocked it out of the park. See you in 7 days!

Apple holding April 20 special event, leaked by Siri

    • When asking Siri “When is the next Apple event?” Siri replies the following: “The event is on Tuesday, April 20, at Apple Park in Cupertino, CA. You can get all the details on Apple.com”
    • Invites for Apple’s Tuesday, April 20 event should be going out in just a few hours as they are generally sent 7 days in advance

Our take: The wait is finally over: we’re getting an Apple event in a week! New iPad Pro and AirTags here we come…

New photo shows upcoming iPhone 12 case colors

The image: A new photo showing the colors of the Spring 2021 iPhone cases has been shared on Twitter.

Our take: While these are not the official cases, they are a 1:1 look at the colors and configurations for the real ones…and they match up exactly with the leaks from a week or two ago.

  • Apple Stores may be preparing for a new product launch next week

Apple Stores may be preparing for a new product launch next week

The rumor: Apple Stores are gearing-up for a product launch next week, according to Jon Prosser (77.2% accurate).

    • Heard first on the Genius Bar podcast, Prosser says “Apple Stores are preparing for some sort of product release toward the end of next week”
    • Apple is widely expected to release a new iPad Pro with MiniLED, 5G, Thunderbolt and more in the second half of April

Our take: Prosser is yet another source who has heard that at least a new Apple product is coming next week. I think it’ll be the new iPad Pro…and I don’t think we’ll be seeing an April event…

  • ‘HomePod G4’ & ‘HomePod TV’ concepts depict radical designs for future products

‘HomePod G4’ & ‘HomePod TV’ concepts depict radical designs for future products

The concepts: Following a fresh report from Mark Gurman (89.9% accurate) about the future of the HomePod, designers have released new concepts for what the products could look like.

    • In a simplistic image posted to Twitter, @pwign shares his vision of an iMac G4-style device: a HomePod base and swiveling arm that connects to an iPad Air
    • Writing for 9to5Mac, Parker Ortolani concepts both a sound bar-like Apple TV and iMac-inspired HomePod with iPad fascia

Our take: As much as I felt like these products could be a design disaster earlier, these concepts are quite something. A ‘HomePod G4’ would work super well in my kitchen and, well, we’re all still waiting for a significant Apple TV upgrade
