New rumor says iPhone 14 won’t get a faster chip, only Pro models will

The rumor: The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will not feature the A16 processor, according to Ming-Chi Quo (72.5% accurate).

    The report…

    • Apple’s lower-end iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max are said to keep the same A15 processor that is seen on iPhone 13 now…but users spending more on iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will get a faster A16 chip year-over-year like always
    • Notably the 14 Pro series would also get faster LPDDR 5 RAM and the 14 series would get the slower LPDDR 4X RAM
    • Kuo also confirms the naming of this year’s lineup, iPhone 14 (6.1-inch), iPhone 14 Max (6.7-inch), iPhone 14 Pro (6.1-inch), and iPhone 14 Pro Max (6.7-inch)

Ian’s Take: It seems like more than ever Apple is trying to differentiate their “pro” line from their “consumer” line. Last year Apple gave the iPhone 13 Pro series one more GPU core, and now they are giving the iPhone 14 Pro an exclusive processor.

  • Second image shows iPhone 14 display with larger hole punch design

Second image shows iPhone 14 display with larger hole punch design

The leak: Following a major leak last week about the new look for the “notch” on iPhone 14, a second image shared by ShrimpApplePro (not yet tracked) corroborates the larger size.

    • The new image shows the same pill + hole design that has been rumored for months…but now with the exact diameter of 5.631mm
    • Apple still plans to use the traditional notch look on standard iPhone 14 models: this new design is reserved only for Pro models

Sam’s take: In case there was any doubt about the size of the larger pill + hole design, this should extinguish it. Apple is almost certainly going in this direction whether we like it or not. I think it’s starting to grow on me?

  • New iPhone 14 schematic shows actual size of the notch and it’s huge

New iPhone 14 schematic shows actual size of the notch and it’s huge

The rumor: Apple is implementing a larger set of front cutouts than previously expected, according to a new post on Weibo that has been verified by Jon Prosser (69% accurate, via FPT).

    • As seen above, the new cutouts take up much more of the display than previous renders had shown
    • It looks as if Apple is essentially taking the components of the notch and applying them directly in the display, eliminating any waste areas that don’t include the cameras or sensors

Sam’s take: I know the common take would be that this looks worse because it’s bigger…but there’s something about the scale now that actually looks more realistic to me. Probably because it is literally the components of the current notch but without the dead space. I still can’t believe they’re putting a literal i on the front of iPhone 14, but this is a slight improvement?

  • iPhone 14 battery life may improve because of better 5G chip

iPhone 14 battery life may improve because of better 5G chip

The rumor: Apple is planning to put a significantly upgraded 5G chip inside iPhone 14 models later this year, according to Economic Daily News (EDN, 83.3% accurate).

    Here’s what you should know…

    • The new 5G chips will be manufactured entirely by TSMC using a new 6nm process, resulting in a chip design that is smaller but also consumes less power
    • Wi-Fi 6E will also be supported on this new 5G chip, meaning that iPhone 14 could also gain that faster wireless tech, too

Sam’s take: One of the biggest problems with 5G right now is that the modems and chips consume a significant amount of energy over 4G…and that leads to worse battery life. This could fix half of the equation and I can only imagine the improvements when compounded atop a more efficient A16 processor.

  • iPhone 14 enters trial production as development continues

iPhone 14 enters trial production as development continues

The rumor: Apple is moving forward with trial production for iPhone 14 right now, according to Economic Daily News (83.3% accurate).

    Here’s what you should know…

    • The purpose of trial production is to “collect data, correct abnormalities, evaluate the production process and products that need to be improved, and evaluate whether the trail-produced products are acceptable”
    • Trial production for the new iPhone models begins in February/March each year in order “to establish appropriate production and testing machines” and “establish a quality monitoring process”

Our take: It appears that design-wise, things are pretty much ready to go for iPhone 14. But we won’t know if Apple encounters and significant delays or issues until we hear how trial production is progressing. As of now, expect the iPhone 14 in September, per usual.

  • iPhone 14 Pro may feature more RAM than ever before

iPhone 14 Pro may feature more RAM than ever before

The rumor: Apple will be upgrading the RAM on iPhone 14 Pro significantly, according to a slightly sketchy report from leaker yeux1122 (not yet tracked).

    Here’s what the source says…

    • The iPhone 14 Pro memory components have been finalized and the 2022 lineup will see a dramatic upgrade from 6 to 8GB in RAM capacity
    • yeux1122 adds that production for the 2022 iPhones is accelerating
    • This source has previously shared accurate information about product releases such as the launch time frame and the chassis design of the iPad mini, but their track record is limited and not always accurate

Ian’s Take: While the source’s track record does not inspire much confidence, an upgrade in RAM capacity makes a lot of sense and I could see it happening. The iPhone 14 Pro is widely expected to feature the highest megapixel count by far in any iPhone, and that requires a lot of memory. RAM has never been a problem on iPhones because of the optimization done in iOS, but this new camera hardware could require a push up.

  • Lower-end iPhone 14 models rumored to gain pro features…including 120Hz ProMotion

Lower-end iPhone 14 models rumored to gain pro features…including 120Hz ProMotion

The rumor: There might be less of an incentive to buy an iPhone 14 Pro later this year, according to Jeff Pu (53.3% accurate).

Here’s the research note, via MacRumors

    • 120Hz ProMotion may be available across the board on all iPhone 14 models
    • All 2022 iPhones are also said to feature 6GB RAM (iPhone 13 mini and iPhone 13 only have 4GB)
    • Storage capacities may start at 64GB on iPhone 14 and 256GB on iPhone 14 Pro

Our take: I find this report sus for two reasons. First, if there was ever to be a feature limited to the pro iPhones, ProMotion would be it. The reason being that most folks don’t really notice the difference between 60 and 120Hz. So why would Apple put that on the default phones that most people will buy so quickly? Second, I don’t buy that the iPhone 14 will start at only 64GB of storage…considering that the current iPhone 13 starts at 128GB. It would be an odd look to downgrade storage year-over-year. I say all of this to say that Pu is roughly half right and half wrong overall.

  • iPhone 14 won’t have Touch ID, according to new rumor

iPhone 14 won’t have Touch ID, according to new rumor

The rumor: Apple isn’t bringing back Touch ID on this year’s iPhone 14 models, according to Ross Young (100% accurate).

Our take: What a day for iPhone 14 rumors. Touch ID returning to iPhone has been a rumor floating around for years now, but it doesn’t seem like Apple has cracked the under-display implementation yet. Until then, I’d be perfectly happy with Touch ID embedded in the power button (as seen on iPad Air and iPad mini), but it doesn’t look like Apple wants to go that route on iPhone for some reason.

  • Oh no. This is Apple’s horrible new notch for iPhone 14.

Oh no. This is Apple’s horrible new notch for iPhone 14.

The rumor: Apple is nixing the notch in favor of a dual-cutout design, according to Ross Young (100% accurate).

    • On iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple is apparently planning to place 2 cutouts in the display for the camera and Face ID array…rather than a larger single cutout to house them both as we’ve seen since iPhone X
    • Young specifically says that it will not be a single pill-shaped design as we have seen on Huawei phones

Our take: Well, I hate this. If anyone else, other than Young who is 100% accurate, said that Apple would be opting for a an off-center dual-cutout design…I just wouldn’t believe it. But, I have to considering his track record. So as of right now, this is the design…which actually leaked months ago from an account called ShrimpApplePro on Twitter.

  • This may be the iPhone 14’s all-new “notch”

This may be the iPhone 14’s all-new “notch”

The rumor: Apple’s smaller notch introduced on iPhone 13 may be short-lived, according to Dylandkt (77.5% accurate).

Our take: Pill shaped looks significantly better to me than a circular cutout, so I really hope this is the design that Apple settles on. That being said, we’re still a few months away from the iPhone 14 design being finalized so there’s time for things to change.

  • iPhone 14 won’t have a SIM card slot (rumor)

iPhone 14 won’t have a SIM card slot (rumor)

The rumor: Apple is preparing to sell iPhones without a SIM card slot in 2022, according to MacRumors (78% accurate).

    Here’s what to know…

    • “An anonymous tipster informed MacRumors that Apple has advised major U.S. carriers to prepare for the launch of eSIM-only smartphones by September 2022. The tipster shared a seemingly legitimate document outlining the timeframe for this initiative, although the document does not specifically mention Apple or the iPhone…As part of the transition, some U.S. carriers will allegedly start offering select iPhone 13 models without a nano-SIM card in the box in the second quarter of 2022″ the report says
    • A previous rumor from just a few days ago suggested that a SIM-less iPhone would be dropping in 2023…not next year as this new report suggests

Our take: This is a much more aggressive timeline than I would have anticipated, but it doesn’t sound that wild considering how well eSIM works currently…at least here in the United States. I think the lack of a physical SIM tray would be a major dealbreaker for many folks that live abroad. For reference, MacRumors is 78% accurate for rumors like this one.
