  • iPhone 12 to ship ahead of 12 Pro in October

iPhone 12 to ship ahead of 12 Pro in October

The rumor: Apple is planning a “staggered” release for the iPhone 12 lineup, according to Mark Gurman (86.7% accurate).

    • While the 5.4 and 6.1-inch iPhone 12 models will launch first, the 6.1 and larger 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro models will ship later
      • It’s unclear whether or not the Pro models will be shipping in October
    • DigiTimes (61% accurate) previously suggested that the two 6.1-inch models would roll out first

Our take: This feels far more realistic than one Pro and one non-Pro model shipping together. I can only hope that the extra time needed for the Pro models is to ensure a 120Hz display makes the cut…

  • AirTags & Apple Watch Series 6 unveil possible at Apple October event

AirTags & Apple Watch Series 6 unveil possible at Apple October event

The rumor: The iPhone 12, Apple Watch Series 6 and AirTags will be unveiled at an online Apple event in October, according to Macotakara (67.4%% accurate).

    • Macotakara says this info comes from the supply chain
    • Jon Prosser (77.8% accurate) believes the Apple Watch Series 6 is coming in September
    • AirTags were reportedly set to debut last March alongside the iPhone SE (2020)

Our take: I think Macotakara is off on this one…at least for the Apple Watch Series 6. Stock is really low on Apple’s website currently, but it is very plausible that Apple waits to unveil AirTags until October (on stage at a proper event).

  • Apple Silicon ‘MacBook’ refresh possible this year with up to 20 hour battery life

Apple Silicon ‘MacBook’ refresh possible this year with up to 20 hour battery life

The rumor: Apple is planning to reintroduce the MacBook line later this year with an A14X processor inside, according to The China Times (66.7% accurate).

    • The revamped MacBook is said to way less than 1kg (2.2 lbs)
    • You may be able to get 15-20 hours of battery life due to the new architecture
    • A Retina display will measure 12 inches diagonally

Our take: This marks the second time we’ve heard that Apple is planning to announce the revival of the ‘MacBook’ lineup later this year. Seems like the strategy will definitely be to start small and build up to more expensive devices later on.

  • ‘Dark blue’ iPhone 12 model again rumored for release this year

‘Dark blue’ iPhone 12 model again rumored for release this year

The news: Following last year’s release of Midnight Green, Apple is preparing a new color for some of its iPhone models this year, according to DigiTimes (61% accurate).

    • The new ‘dark blue’ colorway will be a first for an Apple product
    • It’s still unclear whether or not Midnight Green will be eliminated
    • Max Weinbach (39.% accurate) shared the new color was coming months ago

Our take: With multiple sources now reporting the same thing, it seems like ‘dark blue’ is happening this year. That being said, I hope it is complimentary to Midnight Green…not its replacement.

  • Apple Watch Series 5 models out of stock ahead of rumored September refresh

Apple Watch Series 5 models out of stock ahead of rumored September refresh

    • Apple recently registered new iPads and watches in the Eurasian database
    • Jon Prosser (77.8% accurate) has also said that new iPads and watches are coming in September

Our take: Everything at this point suggests new Apple Watch an iPad models are coming very soon. Looks like they’ll be dropping ahead of Apple’s October Special Event after all.

  • Analysis: iOS 14 beta 7 will release as soon as this week

Analysis: iOS 14 beta 7 will release as soon as this week

The analysis: iOS 14 beta 7 is likely coming sometime later this week, according to historical data provided by THINKY BITS.

    • The average number of days in beta 6 is 6.5, excluding iOS 7.0 as an outlier
    • iOS 14 beta 7 is most likely to release on Tuesday, September 1 or Wednesday, September 2

Our take: The times between betas tend to get shorter as we get closer to the GM release. Plus, iOS 14 is launching in September.

  • Purported 2020 iPad schematics leak with 10.8-inch display & Face ID

Purported 2020 iPad schematics leak with 10.8-inch display & Face ID

The leak: Purported schematics for a new 2020 iPad have leaked, courtesy of 91mobiles.

    • A 10.8-inch display is surrounded by thin, iPad Pro-like bezels
    • Face ID is available on the front of the tablet
    • USB-C has replaced the long-standing Lightning port
    • Dual speakers and four mics are here, too
    • An updated Smart Connector appears to support the Magic Keyboard

Our take: I’m much less convinced of these schematics than of the iPad Air quick start guide leak from earlier this week. 91mobiles says the schematics are “from a trusted source,” and the site does have a long history of sharing new designs exclusively. But they also claim the new iPad will have “inductive charging,” which…doesn’t make sense unless Apple makes the next iPad out of glass.

  • Download iOS 14’s exclusive CarPlay wallpapers

Download iOS 14’s exclusive CarPlay wallpapers

The fun: Alonside new wallpapers for iPhone and iPad, iOS 14 also includes some unique new wallpapers for CarPlay (thanks, 9to5Mac).

    • The 10 new wallpapers are similar, but slightly different than those available on other devices
    • There are unique light/dark red and tan variants exclusive to CarPlay
  • iPhone 12 may ship with iOS 14.1

iPhone 12 may ship with iOS 14.1

The news: As Apple is planning to ship iOS 14 in September, the iPhone 12 series will run a newer update when they release later on, according to Mark Gurman (86.7% accurate).

    • iOS 14.1 will likely be the firmware that ships with the iPhone 12 series in October
    • The update will also include new features previewed at WWDC 2020:
      • More detailed App Store privacy pages (see below)
      • Support for App Clips code scanning in the Camera app

Our take: Development on iOS 14 is going smoothly, so a month between 14.0’s release and a larger 14.1 update seems realistic. Plus, 14.1 will surely bundle in a number of new software features exclusive to the 2020 iPhones.

  • Alleged iPad Air 4 images show Touch ID, all-screen design

Alleged iPad Air 4 images show Touch ID, all-screen design

The leak: A seemingly-real quick start guide for the fourth generation iPad Air has surfaced on Twitter, courtesy of DuanRui.

    • An all-screen design is complimented by Touch ID, which can be found in the newly elongated lock/power button
    • There’s a FaceTime HD camera on the front of the tablet
    • A single camera is located on the rear, upper-left hand corner
    • The iPad Air 4 may be coming as soon as September, according to recent leaks

Our take: If these images are fake…they’re really, really good fakes. They look legitimate to me, and they line up with most everything we’ve heard about the next generation iPad Air…that it’s a slightly watered-down iPad Pro.

Touch ID in the power button…hmmm. It’s a stretch for sure, but even it is slightly longer and consistent between these images. Again, I’ve seen bad fakes of quick start guides in the past, and this just feels different. Tweet us with your thoughts @appltrack.

  • iOS 14 will launch in September

iOS 14 will launch in September

The rumor: iOS 14 is still on schedule to launch in September 2020, according to Mark Gurman (86.7% accurate).

    • With the release of the iOS 13.7 beta, there was some concern that iOS 14 would be delayed
    • The new version of iOS always launches in September each year

Our take: Gurman has a great track record for this type of thing, so I’m all-in for September. If you look at the state of the beta right now, it’s pretty obvious everything is going as planned…amazingly.
