Apple may have hinted at new MacBooks coming at WWDC

The news: Apple published a new WWDC 2021 image ahead of their developer conference that kicks off in two weeks, and there may be a hint inside.

    • Hidden in the reflection of one character’s eye are 3 emoji characters referenced via their unicode name
      • Fork and knife, sleeping z’s and the MacBook emoji are all shown as rumors have suggested the new MacBook Pro models are coming this Summer
    • Apple is known to leave subtle hints about upcoming announcements in the marketing materials for events

Our take: This could be a play on this meme… but this hint comes atop other credible sources saying that new MacBook Pro models are coming sooner rather than later. I’m sure a lot of developers make apps on MacBook Pro, so this could be a perfect time to unveil the new one.

  • 2021 MacBook Pro: 10-core CPU, 16/32-core GPU, coming as soon as this Summer

2021 MacBook Pro: 10-core CPU, 16/32-core GPU, coming as soon as this Summer

The rumor: New details about the next 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with Apple Silicon inside have emerged, courtesy of Mark Gurman (88.7% accurate, via Bloomberg).

    • The next M-series chips will include a 10-core processor, with 16 or 32-core GPU options; RAM will also be configurable up to 64GB
    • An improved Neural Engine will also be included, alongside the return of MagSafe, the SD card slot and an HDMI port
    • The new MacBook Pro models may launch as soon as this Summer

Our take: Looks like the first computers to get ‘M1X’ will be the new MacBook Pros. And with Gurman’s unbeatable track record, it seems like these are just around the corner…

  • New 14/16-inch MacBook Pro models potentially delayed until 2022

New 14/16-inch MacBook Pro models potentially delayed until 2022

The rumor: The highly-anticipated MacBook Pro models with Apple Silicon inside aren’t coming this year, according to DigiTimes (63.5% accurate).

    • Apple’s next MacBooks with Mini-LED displays may have been delayed until 2022
    • No further detail is currently available from the DigiTimes paywalled-preview

Our take: For anyone waiting to buy a new 14 or 16-inch MacBook Pro, this isn’t great news. That being said, DigiTimes is the only outlet currently reporting the delay and is less than 65% accurate, so there is s still a chance we see the Mini-LED MacBooks this year.

  • 2021 MacBook Pro schematics show new design, HDMI port, SD card reader & more

2021 MacBook Pro schematics show new design, HDMI port, SD card reader & more

The leak: Apple’s 2021 MacBook Pro schematics have leaked, as shared by a hacking group that won’t be named due to ethical concerns (not yet tracked, via 9to5Mac).

    • The schematics (redacted and instead the concept image above) show a tweaked, more curvy design for the upcoming MacBook Pro models
    • Apple is making major changes to the ports on the device: HDMI, the SD card slot and MagSafe are all returning

Our take: This is one of THE crazier leaks we’ve ever seen, because the image comes from a hacking group that runs “a private ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) operation.” Essentially, the hacking group is extorting Quanta computer after stealing data from Quanta’s servers. Quanta is in Apple’s supply chain and thus has access to proprietary designs and product schematics. That puts us here: the hacking is asking for a sum of money and says they will leak Apple’s unreleased products each day until the ransom is met.

This is wild, and I’ve updated this article due to ethical concerns with naming the group.

  • New MacBook Pros may not launch until second half of 2021

New MacBook Pros may not launch until second half of 2021

The rumor: Apple’s redesigned MacBook Pro models may not be launching for a few months still, according to Nikkei Asia (not yet tracked).

    • Nikkei says that mass production, which was initially scheduled for May or June, will not happen until the second half of 2021
    • Previous reports suggested that the new MacBooks could lunch as soon as this Summer

Our take: If there’s any good news in the story, perhaps it’s the fact that something like the iMac may have been pushed up for release…but that’s just a guess. Doesn’t seem like these new MBPs will be launching until sometime in the Fall.

  • 2021 MacBook Pro may see return of HDMI port & SD card reader

2021 MacBook Pro may see return of HDMI port & SD card reader

The rumor: Apple is preparing to make the MacBook Pro, pro again, according to Ming-Chi Kuo (78.2% accurate).

    • In addition to the SD card reader returning, a physical HDMI port may also see its return to the MacBook Pro lineup
    • Rumors suggest the MacBook Pro update will be happening sometime this summer

Our take: This is incredible news from a super credible source. Fantastic that we are getting more I/O back on a notebook that never should have lost it.

  • 2021 14/16″ MacBook Pros to have upgraded screens, release in mid-2021

2021 14/16″ MacBook Pros to have upgraded screens, release in mid-2021

Updated 1/22: Gurman has released a new report saying that the SD card reader will make its way back to MacBook Pros as part of an upgraded I/O effort.

The rumor: Apple’s redesigned MacBook Pro models are coming in the middle of 2021, according to Mark Gurman (89.1% accurate).

Similar to Kuo’s recent report, here’s what to expect:

    • “Minor design changes” for the new MacBook Pro models
    • 14/16-inch displays, with “brighter, higher-contrast panels”
    • New Apple Silicon chips with “more cores and enhanced graphics”
    • MagSafe port replacing current USB-C charging which will support faster charging
    • The Touch Bar may be removed
    • A new, redesigned MacBook Air is also in the works…but it isn’t coming anytime soon

Our take: Seems like Kuo and Gurman disagree on how significant the design changes will be. Incredible to hear that the displays are getting significant upgrades and faster charging is in the works. These machines sound almost perfect.

Download the new M1 MacBook Pro wallpaper here

The wallpaper: Apple showcases a new, unreleased wallpaper on the box for the brand new M1-powered MacBook Pro.

    • It’s visually similar to the 16-inch MacBook Pro’s wallpaper
    • Apple hasn’t released a full-resolution original yet, but this article will are updated if or when they do

Our take: Taken from the box itself, the wallpaper features greens, blues and a streak of pink. It’s one of my favorite stock wallpapers in a while.

  • New 13-inch MacBook Pro with Apple M1 chip announced

New 13-inch MacBook Pro with Apple M1 chip announced

    • Active cooling system
    • 3 studio quality mics

Our take: The best battery life ever in a Mac. Wow. Literally can’t describe how wild this jump is. Doesn’t feel possible or real.

  • Apple may announce 2 new 13-inch MacBooks on November 10

Apple may announce 2 new 13-inch MacBooks on November 10

The rumor: Apple is preparing significant updates to 2 of their most popular notebooks, according to Lovetodream (88.5% accurate).

    • First to get Apple Silicon will likely be 2 new MacBook models
    • Apple currently offers two notebooks in a 13-inch size: MacBook Air and MacBook Pro
    • Previous rumors suggested Apple would bring back the ‘MacBook’ line

Our take: As I’ve said from the beginning, Apple is planning to start small and build up to bigger and better computers with their own silicon inside. This makes perfect sense to me.

  • 2020 16-inch MacBook Pro refresh possible soon

2020 16-inch MacBook Pro refresh possible soon

The evidence: Apple may be refreshing the 16-inch MacBook Pro soon, as spotted by Atharva Kale and MacRumors.

    • Boot Camp for macOS was recently updated, mentioning a 16-inch MacBook Pro (2020) for the first time ever
    • In Apple’s own words, at WWDC 2020: “We have some new Intel-based Macs in the pipeline that we’re really excited about.” (watch the clip below)
    • So far, the only new Intel Mac announced since June was a 27-inch iMac, which suggests a new 16-inch model would likely retain an Intel chip

Our take: It’s been about a year since the 16-inch MacBook Pro was released initially, so it is feasible that an upgrade is coming soon. But I have a hard time imagining that Apple would introduce a new Intel Mac at next month’s November 17 Apple Silicon event.
