All the official iOS 14 features not included in beta 1

The news: Here’s a list of all the iOS 14 features Apple showed off at WWDC…but that aren’t currently available.

Coming in a future 14.0 beta

    • Clock widget on the home screen: two sizes shown
    • Tweaked Calendar app icon with abbreviated day text
    • Maps Guides to explore new cities
    • Car Keys (also coming in a future iOS 13 update)
    • Ability to natively blur wallpapers*

Coming in a future update to iOS 14 (likely 14.1)

    • More detailed App Store privacy pages (see below)
    • Support for App Clips code scanning in the Camera app

Our take: I’m looking most forward to seeing the larger clock widget and updated home screen icon for Calendar. These will likely be added in one of the next couple betas, with beta 2 coming as soon as this week.

*Apple’s widgets introduction video shows blurred versions of the stock wallpapers, but there is no way to do this natively yet. A few months back, we saw what could potentially be our first look at a redesigned wallpaper UI.

  • Analysis: iOS 14 beta 2 release date

Analysis: iOS 14 beta 2 release date

The analysis: iOS 14 beta 2 will likely be released early next week, according to historical data from Thinky Bits.

    • The average number of days for a beta 1 release (excluding 10.0 as an outlier) is 14.833
    • Monday, July 6 and Tuesday, July 7 at 10am PST are the most likely release dates for iOS 14 beta 2

Our take: Apple could, of course, not follow what they’ve done historically (we are still in the middle of a pandemic that only appears to be growing). But I think Monday and Tuesday next week are most sensible even with the extenuating circumstances.

  • iOS 13.6 beta 3 released to developers

iOS 13.6 beta 3 released to developers

The news: Following last week’s massive iOS 14 beta 1 release, iOS 13.6 beta 3 is out now for developers.

    • Apple confirmed at WWDC that CarKey support would be added in the iOS 13.6 update
    • Previously iOS 13.6 added a new toggle to download and install updates automatically

Our take: Although I’ve said this before, iOS 13.6 has to be the last iOS 13 update, right? I’m shocked that Apple is still putting so much time in effort into the 2019 release even now… especially with the iOS 14 beta cycle in full swing.

  • Exclusive: Hands-on with iPhone 12’s radical new design

Exclusive: Hands-on with iPhone 12’s radical new design

Watch the hands-on video here: https://youtu.be/pdSs2DMwWyE

The exclusive: The new iPhones coming out later this year will all feature a radical new design that is starkly different from the iPhone 11 series.

    • As previously rumored, the design looks similar to iPad Pro with stainless steel (Pro models) or aluminum (non-Pro models) wrapped around the edges
    • There are 3 sizes but 4 models to choose from this year:
      • 12: 5.4-inch and 6.1-inch
      • 12 Pro: 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch
    • For the first time since the iPhone 5s, the phones can stand up on their own
    • The camera module on all models is incomplete and exists as a placeholder

Our take: These are the best looking iPhone models ever, and they genuinely feel like something new for the first time in years. We haven’t seen a significant design upgrade since we went from iPhone 5s to iPhone 6, and this year a shift is happening again. Sitting in your hand, the squared design feels just as a right to me as the more curvy iPhones released most recently. You’re going to love these.

  • Ming-Chi Kuo says iPhone 12 won’t include headphones or charger in box

Ming-Chi Kuo says iPhone 12 won’t include headphones or charger in box

The sadness: Following the lead of other sources, Ming-Chi Kuo (76.4% accurate) says that he also thinks Apple will be slimming down in-box accessories for the iPhone 12.

    • Only a Lightning to USB-C cable will be included in the box of new phones this year
    • Apple plans to start selling a new 20W charger as a separate accessory
    • Later this year, even the iPhone SE won’t include a charger

Our take: Yeah so, this is simply disappointing. A significant number of people can barely keep track of the one charger included with their iPhone: if Apple doesn’t include a charger at all this year, it’s going to seriously and negatively affect those users.

  • More evidence suggests 120Hz display coming to iPhone 12

More evidence suggests 120Hz display coming to iPhone 12

The news: Apple will likely include 120Hz ProMotion displays on the highest end iPhones later this year, according to a setting included in iOS 14 beta 1 and Ice Universe.

    • On iPhone 11 Pro Max, iOS 14 beta 1 includes a new accessibility toggle known as “Limit Frame Rate”
      • This toggle is currently present on iPad Pros with ProMotion
    • Unrated Twitter leaker Ice universe has also heard 120Hz is coming from “a reliable source”

Our take: Over a year ago, Ice universe was the first source to put a rumor out about 120Hz on the new iPhones this year, and it appears he was right from the start. And the fact that Apple is testing a version of iOS 14 with a “limit frame rate” setting on iPhone is a really good sign!

  • iPhone 12 may not ship with EarPods or a charger in the box

iPhone 12 may not ship with EarPods or a charger in the box

The rumor: Not only will EarPods not be included with the iPhone 12 this year, a charger might not be free, either, according to Barclays (57.9% accurate).

    • Only a USB-C to Lightning cable will be included in the box, alongside the device itself
    • Announcement for all of the new phones is said to happen in September
    • The analysts also say that due to production delays, some models won’t be available until October or November

Our take: While the iPhone is rumored to go portless next year, it wouldn’t make any sense to remove the charging brick this year. I think Barclays will miss the mark on this one. Why would saving a couple of dollars be worth frustrating the vast majority of your buyer-base? Doesn’t make any sense to me.

  • iPhone 12 may ship with faster 20W charger

iPhone 12 may ship with faster 20W charger

The news: This year’s iPhone 12 may be getting a faster 20w charger in the box, according to Mr.white (25% accurate).

    • The iPhone 11 Pro series currently ships with an 18W adapter
    • All lower-end iPhones still include the archaic 5W brick

Our take: The 18W adapter is already wicked fast, so the extra 2 watts here will help things charge even faster…if the battery stays the same size. But I have a feeling that the extra juice will be to fill up a larger battery at the same rate as the current models.

  • AirPods Pro 2D27 update released

    AirPods Pro 2D27 update released

The news: Apple just updated AirPods Pro to version 2D27, according to MacRumors.

    • Like always, Apple hasn’t published any release notes, so much of ‘what’s new’ is anecdotal
    • Some AirPods Pro owners have been complaining of weakened noise cancellation since November 2019
    • Just weeks ago, Apple released 2D15 to both AirPods and AirPods Pro

Our take: After updating, noise cancellation seemed way stronger. It was close to launch-day levels that so many users have missed!
