  • AirPods Pro 2 may come in multiple sizes

AirPods Pro 2 may come in multiple sizes

The rumor: Apple may be working on multiple sizes of second generation AirPods Pro, according to Mr.white (50% accurate).

    • New images depict a longer cable attached to a similar System in Package (SiP) design
    • White also suggests the same audio chip (H1) will be included

Our take: White, who is accurate about half of the time, interestingly refers to the “W2 Chips,” in these images. However, Apple replaced the W1 chip in AirPods 1 with the H1 chip powering AirPods 2/Pro–perhaps he is referring to H1 as the second generation ‘W2’ chip? With no other sources reporting different sizing for AirPods Pro 2, this is a first.

  • AirPods Max ‘Sport’ variant could launch at a later date

AirPods Max ‘Sport’ variant could launch at a later date

The rumor: While Apple recently launched their highest-end AirPods Max offering, a lower-cost model may also be in the pipeline.

    • Over the past few months, both Mark Gurman (89.1% accurate) and Jon Prosser (79.2% accurate) reported on Apple developing a lower-cost ‘Sport’ variant, made of cheaper materials that would be better for activities like working out
    • This sport model, and other features like reversibility and interchangeable head bands, were cut in an effort to get AirPods Max out the door before the end of the year

Our take: I think that Apple should’ve started here before going full-send on a $549 model. A physically lighter sport version, for $349, would be significantly more appealing to me.

  • Apple Car battery tech is “next level,” production in 2024

Apple Car battery tech is “next level,” production in 2024

The rumor: As expected, while Apple’s car project is still in development, it isn’t coming anytime soon, according to Reuters (not yet rated).

    • The battery is reportedly a monocell design, which “frees up space inside the battery pack by eliminating pouches and modules that hold battery materials”
    • A person familiar with the battery technology described it as “Next level…like the first time you saw the iPhone.”
    • Apple Car is said to feature LiDAR sensors to guide the self-driving system
    • Production delays could push the project until 2025 or later

Our take: Great story from an extremely reputable source that rarely, if ever, publishes Apple scoops like this. Apple’s battery tech is way more advanced and further along than I expected, but again, don’t expect this car before 2024 at the earliest.

  • Apple Car may debut in September 2021

Apple Car may debut in September 2021

The rumor: Apple’s top-secret, highly-anticipated car project is just under a year away from being announced, according to Economic Daily News (EDN, 36.8% accurate).

    • The report says that Apple Car production will be ramping up in the second quarter of 2021, with Apple planning an unveil in September
    • Early rumors suggest the car will be all-electric and including self-driving capabilities
    • Other analysts have suggested that a 2023-2025 timeline for Apple Car is far more realistic

Our take: EDN is the lowest-rated source that we track on our leaderboard. They’re consistently more wrong than right, and with no other source with any slight of credibility suggesting the same 2021 release date…this feels so wrong. Maybe they’re referring to some major update to CarPlay, or something else car-related?

  • iPhone 13 may support Wi-Fi 6E

    iPhone 13 may support Wi-Fi 6E

The rumor: Apple may significantly upgrade the wireless capabilities on the iPhone 13 lineup, according to Barclays (64.7% accurate, spotted by MacRumors).

    • Wi-Fi 6E is broadcast on the 6GHz spectrum: for years, Wi-Fi has been limited to only 2.4/5Ghz frequencies
    • Wi-Fi Alliance describes Wi-Fi 6E as “higher performance, lower latency, and faster data rates – extended into the 6 GHz band”

Our take: Many analysts are projecting that the first consumer applications of 6E will be in smartphones. Apple is pretty quick to adopt this stuff, so I think we’ll see it in the 2021 iPhones.

  • Apple’s future M-series chips may have up to 32-cores, improved graphics

Apple’s future M-series chips may have up to 32-cores, improved graphics

The rumor: Future versions of Apple’s wildly powerful M-series chips are coming throughout 2021, according to Mark Gurman (89.1% accurate).

    • Apple is reportedly planning “the next two lines of Apple chips,” with speculation that they could be called M1X and M2
    • 8, 12 or 16 high-performance cores are planned for new MacBook Pro and iMac models, with up to 32-cores coming to the new “half-size” Mac Pro
    • In the graphics department, Apple is working on 16-core and 32-core options for future laptops and desktops
    • The next generation of ARM chips are said to be coming in Spring and Fall 2021, powering new versions of MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac Pro

Our take: If Apple is able to scale the baseline M1 chip…the results are going to literally be off the charts. These redesigned Macs can’t come soon enough.

  • Working iPhone 13 prototypes reportedly have Touch ID under-the-display

Working iPhone 13 prototypes reportedly have Touch ID under-the-display

The rumor: Apple is moving forward with the development of a reinvented version of Touch ID, according to Jon Prosser (79.2% accurate).

    • 2 functional iPhone 13 prototypes in testing are said to have under-screen Touch ID right now
    • Prosser notes that the presence of a feature on an early prototype does not guarantee that it will ship on the final product next year
    • That being said, other sources have also stated that Touch ID will make a comeback soon

Our take: Could definitely see this and 120Hz being reserved for the Pro models next year. This would be a big reason for me to upgrade.

  • iPhone 13 to launch in September 2021, per usual

iPhone 13 to launch in September 2021, per usual

The rumor: Following a disrupted year of development and production in 2020, Apple plans to launch the iPhone 13 on time in 2021, according to Ming-Chi Kuo (78.2% accurate).

    • This information suggests that the new iPhone models will launch in September 2021, rather than the October/November timeline we saw this year
    • Current iPhone 13 rumors include a 120Hz display on Pro models, and the return of Touch ID

Our take: With most companies learning how to work better throughout a pandemic, it sounds very realistic that the iPhones next year will launch as they have historically…in September.

  • AirPods 3 may cost $199, H1 chip inside

AirPods 3 may cost $199, H1 chip inside

The rumor: Apple is planning to upgrade AirPods in the first half of 2021, according to The Elec (75% accurate).

    • AirPods 3 will feature a similar design to AirPods Pro, but won’t include noise cancellation
    • A H1 audio chip may power the pods inside
    • These updated entry-level AirPods, coming in the first half of 2021, are rumored to cost $199

Our take: Most interesting bit of the report from The Elec is this: “Apple initially planned to launch a Lite version right after the AirPods Pro were launched in October of last year. But the company canceled this as AirPods Pro were selling better than expected.” Seems like third generation AirPods were supposed to come out in 2020…but too many people were already buying AirPods Pro.
