The rumor: Future versions of Apple’s wildly powerful M-series chips are coming throughout 2021, according to Mark Gurman (89.1% accurate).

    • Apple is reportedly planning “the next two lines of Apple chips,” with speculation that they could be called M1X and M2
    • 8, 12 or 16 high-performance cores are planned for new MacBook Pro and iMac models, with up to 32-cores coming to the new “half-size” Mac Pro
    • In the graphics department, Apple is working on 16-core and 32-core options for future laptops and desktops
    • The next generation of ARM chips are said to be coming in Spring and Fall 2021, powering new versions of MacBook Pro, iMac and Mac Pro

Our take: If Apple is able to scale the baseline M1 chip…the results are going to literally be off the charts. These redesigned Macs can’t come soon enough.

The wallpapers: In macOS 11.1, Apple included two new stunning wallpapers…including the one on the box art of the new M1 MacBook Pro.

    • There are two new variations of the ‘light stream’ style wallpapers:
      • Light Stream Green
      • Light Stream Pink

Our take: Super glad to see Apple release these officially, in high resolution. The green variant is one of my favorite new desktop images in years.

Numerous redesigned Macs likely coming in the second half of 2021

The rumor: Apple plans to significantly upgrade a number of Macs in the second half of 2021, according to L0vetodream (88.9% accurate) and Ming-Chi Kuo (78% accurate).

    • While Kuo suggests design changes are coming only to Macs with Apple Silicon, L0vetodream suggests Intel Macs will see redesigns as well
    • 14/16-inch MacBook Pro models and a smaller Mac Pro are expected
    • Apple debuted the M1 chip in MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini earlier this month

Our take: Seems like the second half of next year will be huge for the Mac. I am extremely excited to see what Apple can do with their silicon in optimized designs.

  • First Apple M1 Geekbench results show massive gains

First Apple M1 Geekbench results show massive gains

The news: The first Geekbench test of Apple’s M1 processor has been performed, and the results in the single-core range are incredible.

    • Here are the results from M1 inside the new MacBook Air:
      • Single-core score of 1,687
      • Multi-core score of 7,433
    • If situated on Geekbench’s leaderboards right now, the M1 chip would sit at #1 on the list of single-core scores and #13 for multi-core scores
    • This result fully outperforms the most expensive 16-inch MacBook Pro
    • And as noted by Steve Troughton-Smith, the multi-core score of 7,433 is only 556 points off from…the base Mac Pro, Apple’s highest-end Mac line

Our take: Wow. These results are absolutely out of this world. It’s everything we hoped in more…and the MacBook Air is Apple’s lowest-end offering for M1.

  • Apple announces M1 chip for Silicon Macs

Apple announces M1 chip for Silicon Macs

The news: Apple has announced the first processor made for the Mac at their ‘one more thing’ event.

    • 8-core CPU, with 4 high efficiency cores
    • Similarly, it has the world’s fastest 8-core GPU
    • It’s got 5nm architecture, like the A14 chip in iPhone and iPad
    • Apple claims it has the world’s fastest single CPU core with the best CPU performance per watt

Our take: Wow. Seems Apple Silicon is shaping up to be everything we hoped and dreamed about

  • New concept shows redesigned Mac mini with Apple Silicon

New concept shows redesigned Mac mini with Apple Silicon

The concept: As Apple prepares to enter a 2-year transition for Apple Silicon, a new concept from Viktor Kádár and ALTRD Studio shows their vision for a redesigned Mac mini.

    • The new Mac mini would have a significantly smaller form factor at just over 5 inches long and wide and barely over an inch tall
    • Internals include an A14X processor and Apple custom GPU
    • While the concept looks stunning on the outside, the inside has been meticulously designed as well, to simulate a real product that could exist one day
    • View the full concept on Behance

Our take: Kádár and ALTRD Studio’s work has long been some of my favorite, especially after their recent iMac concept. With Apple Silicon, Apple could really scale a number of their products down…as recent rumors for the next-gen Mac Pro have suggested.

  • 13-inch MacBook Air & Pro to get Apple Silicon this week (update: no 16-inch?)

13-inch MacBook Air & Pro to get Apple Silicon this week (update: no 16-inch?)

Update 11/9: Gurman has updated his initial report to say that only the 2 new 13-inch models are for sure coming at the event on Tuesday. The 16-inch MacBook Pro with Apple Silicon is on the way, but as production is further behind than the other models, it may not make the cut.

The rumor: Apple is planning 3 significant MacBook updates at their Apple Silicon event next week, according to Mark Gurman (88.3% accurate).

    • 13-inch versions of the MacBook Air and Pro and the 16-inch Pro are all getting Apple Silicon on November 10
    • The Apple-designed processor inside is apparently based off the A14 chip included in iPhone 12 and iPad Air
    • No major design upgrades are expected…they MacBooks will look aesthetically similar to how they do currently

Our take: Wow! So the entire MacBook lineup is getting Apple Silicon next week. We had no idea until now that the 16-inch model would be getting it this early on.

  • Apple may announce 2 new 13-inch MacBooks on November 10

Apple may announce 2 new 13-inch MacBooks on November 10

The rumor: Apple is preparing significant updates to 2 of their most popular notebooks, according to Lovetodream (88.5% accurate).

    • First to get Apple Silicon will likely be 2 new MacBook models
    • Apple currently offers two notebooks in a 13-inch size: MacBook Air and MacBook Pro
    • Previous rumors suggested Apple would bring back the ‘MacBook’ line

Our take: As I’ve said from the beginning, Apple is planning to start small and build up to bigger and better computers with their own silicon inside. This makes perfect sense to me.

Many 13″ MacBook Pro & 21.5″ iMac models out of stock ahead of rumored November event

The news: A number of popular Macs aren’t shipping until early December, according to data provided on apple.com.

    • Everything that’s out of stock right now:
      • All 21.5-inch 4K iMac models ship on December 3
      • The highest-end 27-inch 5K iMac ships between November 25-December 3
      • All iMac Pro models ship on December 10
      • Both higher-end 13-inch MacBook Pro models ship on December 2
    • And the computes in stock:
      • All Mac mini models
      • All MacBook Air models
      • All Mac Pro models
      • The base, non-4K 21.5-inch iMac
      • Both 16-inch MacBook Pro models
    • Apple is rumored to hold their next event on Tuesday, November 17 where the first Mac(s) powered by Apple Silicon will be unveiled

Our take: Stock supply on Apple’s site isn’t always a guarantee that new products are on the way, but with rumors swirling of new Macs on the way…the 13-inch MacBook Pro and 21.5-inch iMac shortages align perfectly with the leaks. Earlier this year, stock for Apple Watch Series 5 was out of whack just ahead of the Series 6 unveil.

macOS Big Sur 11.0.1 beta references 3 unreleased Macs

    • 9to5Mac notes that the 3 new Mac references include the following:
      • MacHardwareTypes-2020f.bundle
      • MacHardwareTypes-2020g.bundle
      • MacHardwareTypes-2020h.bundle
    • The new bundles don’t reveal what Mac models are coming, and it’s possible that the references could be for 3 distinct models…or just 1
    • Apple is rumored to be holding their final event of the year on November 17

Our take: Even more confirmation that new Macs are coming. One of these, for sure will have Apple Silicon inside…but I’d bet at least one of these Macs will have Intel inside.
