iPhone 14 CADs leak showing last year’s phone…

The leak: Newly published CADs of the iPhone 14 show minimal design changes over last year’s iPhone 13, according to MySmartPrice (not yet tracked).

    The details…

Ian’s take: I mean what can I say…it looks like the iPhone 13 and will have last year’s chip. It seems that Apple is now realizing they were making their lower end devices too compelling. They are differentiating the Pro line this year more than ever with a newer chip and new display design. It is unfortunate, but I see where they are coming from.

  • Kuo: No mini-LED for 11-inch iPad Pro or upcoming ‘Studio Display Pro’ in 2022

Kuo: No mini-LED for 11-inch iPad Pro or upcoming ‘Studio Display Pro’ in 2022

The report: Apple will not release devices that require new sized Mini-LED displays in 2022, according to Ming-Chi Kuo (72.5% accurate).

Ian’s Take: Kuo and Young, two very reputable sources, agree that the 11-inch iPad Pro will not get a Mini-LED display this year. This is disappointing as it seemed that Apple was finally starting to make their smaller devices equal to their larger devices (ex. iPhone 13 Pro vs. Pro Max, 14-inch MacBook Pro vs. 16-inch). While I agree with Kuo on the iPad Pro, I don’t agree with him on the upcoming ‘Studio Display Pro.’ I believe that if Apple wants to release a display in the $3000 range, it has to feature Mini-LED. It looks like we won’t have to wait long to see this display: Ross Young says it could release as early as June.

  • iPhone 14 design images leak and it’s not what we expected…

iPhone 14 design images leak and it’s not what we expected…

The leak: New CADs show a similar design to iPhone 13 instead of the radical redesign that we heard so much about, from 91Mobiles (not yet tracked).

    The details…

Ian’s Take: With Jon Prosser receiving actual images of the device, CADs, and schematics, I fully expected that the design we would get in September would be a throwback to the iPhone 4. Notably, the reliable Mark Gurman said that the iPhone 14 would be a “complete redesign,” unlike these new CADs. That being said, this makes sense to me. Apple rarely likes to do a complete redesign of a product, and the iPhone 12 design has only been used for 2 years. I guess we will have to wait a while until more sources can confirm or deny the validity of these images.

  • Mac Studio hands-on photos surface online ahead of official release

Mac Studio hands-on photos surface online ahead of official release

The photos: A lucky customer by the name of Simon received his Mac Studio days ahead of the official release on Friday, according to Apple blog Mac4Ever.

    • The photos, which can be seen above and below, show us around the device in our first ever hands-on look at the all-new Mac Studio…which sits atop a unique base that has slew of precision-milled aluminum holes for air intake
    • “Our reader Simon tells us that he received his machine, a Mac Studio M1 Max, a few days in advance thanks to an error from the store (where he ordered it yesterday!)” Mac4Ever says

Sam’s take: I am wickedly excited to get my hands on this machine. It is, essentially, everything I have ever wanted from a Mac and these photos make the design look so slick. I’m ready for Friday!

  • Yet another rumor says this is the new design for iPhone 14

Yet another rumor says this is the new design for iPhone 14

The rumor: The iPhone 14 Pro will feature both a hole and pill in place of the notch, according to Max Weinbach (69% accurate).

Ian’s Take: While obviously, I am happy about the notch going away, is this really the best solution? I feel this nonsymmetrical cutout of sensors will not look the best in person, especially considering the size. Apple wants to be unique, and they want to be recognizable, and this is how they will set themselves apart from the many “hole punch” screen designs on popular Android phones.

  • iPhone 14 may feature rumored satellite connectivity, but no more mini model

iPhone 14 may feature rumored satellite connectivity, but no more mini model

The rumor: A new report from 9to5Mac (82.8% accurate) is just in with some fresh details about the upcoming iPhone 14 series, set to debut later this year.

    Here’s what you should know…

Sam’s take: I am over-the-moon to hear that satellite messaging is still in the works. As I said when we first heard about this months ago: this will be game-changing. I think this is reactively likely to happen on iPhone 14, even though 9to5Mac didn’t say it would definitively.

  • Gurman: Larger iMac Pro with Apple Silicon is still coming

Gurman: Larger iMac Pro with Apple Silicon is still coming

The rumor: Amidst rumors that the larger iMac is officially dead and there won’t be an iMac Pro…Mark Gurman (86.4% accurate, via Power On) believes otherwise.

    • With Apple announcing that M1 Ultra is the final chip in the M1 series, that Mac Pro is the final computer to be transitioned to Apple Silicon, and considering that Apple discontinued the existing 27-inch iMac, it appeared that Apple was saying there would be no more larger iMacs
    • “Some viewers took this to mean there would be no new iMac Pro with chips on par with the MacBook Pro or Mac Studio. I don’t think that’s the case. I still strongly believe a larger iMac with Apple’s pro chips is in development—but I don’t think it, nor the next Mac Pro, are coming anytime soon. The company’s statement is still technically true: The Mac Pro will be the last new Mac to get Apple Silicon. That’s because the iMac Pro doesn’t actually exist as a product. How can Apple update something that isn’t available? The Intel 27-inch iMac was just discontinued, and the previous iMac Pro was killed off a year ago,” Gurman says

Sam’s take: I’m extremely split on this because I can fully see Apple going either direction here. In one hand, the iMac is an iconic line and situates itself as a good middle-ground between a MacBook Pro and Mac Pro. On the other, that’s precisely where the Mac Studio and Studio Display sit now, too. But the iMac, as an all-in-one, is an iconic brand at this point that so many people know and love. Yet you could argue that’s why the 24-inch colorful iMac exists, though…

  • Apple releases iOS 15.4 update: this is what’s new

Apple releases iOS 15.4 update: this is what’s new

The news: Apple just dropped the biggest update to iOS 15 yet with a plethora of new features and changes.

    New features…

    • Face ID while wearing a mask option on iPhone 12 and newer
    • Apple Pay and password autofill in apps and Safari can be used with Face ID while wearing a mask
    • New emoji including faces, hand gestures, and household objects are now available in emoji keyboard
    • Handshake emoji allows you to choose separate skin tones for each hand
    • SharePlay sessions can be initiated directly from supported apps
    • Siri can provide time and date information while offline on iPhone XS, iPhone XR, iPhone 11 or newer
    • Siri now includes an additional voice, expanding the diversity of options
    • EU Digital COVID Certificate support in Health enables you to download and store verifiable versions of COVID-19 vaccination, lab results, and recovery records
    • COVID-19 vaccination cards in Apple Wallet now support the EU Digital COVID Certificate format

    General enhancements…

    • Safari webpage translation adds support for Italian and Chinese (Traditional)
    • Podcasts app adds episode filters for seasons, played, unplayed, saved, or downloaded episodes
    • iCloud custom email domains can be managed from Settings
    • News offers enhanced discovery of audio content in the Today feed and Audio tab
    • Camera in keyboard can be used to add text to Notes and Reminders
    • Shortcuts now supports adding, removing, or querying tags with Reminders
    • Emergency SOS settings have changed to use Call with Hold for all users. Call with 5 Presses is still available as an option in Emergency SOS settings
    • Close-up in Magnifier uses the ultra-wide camera on iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max to help you see small objects
    • Saved passwords can now include your own notes in Settings

    And the bug fixes…

    • Keyboard may insert period between typed numbers
    • News widgets in Today View may not open articles when tapped
    • Photos and videos may not sync to iCloud Photo Library
    • Speak Screen Accessibility feature may quit unexpectedly within the Books app
    • Live Listen may not turn off when switched off in Control Center

Sam’s take: This is unequivocally the most impactful update since iOS 15 released last September. The new Face ID unlock while wearing a mask is game changing…although ironically late as mask mandates are relaxing in many places around the world. But the new emoji are fun as ever and Siri has a slick new gender-neutral voice.

  • New rumor says iPhone 14 won’t get a faster chip, only Pro models will

New rumor says iPhone 14 won’t get a faster chip, only Pro models will

The rumor: The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will not feature the A16 processor, according to Ming-Chi Quo (72.5% accurate).

    The report…

    • Apple’s lower-end iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max are said to keep the same A15 processor that is seen on iPhone 13 now…but users spending more on iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will get a faster A16 chip year-over-year like always
    • Notably the 14 Pro series would also get faster LPDDR 5 RAM and the 14 series would get the slower LPDDR 4X RAM
    • Kuo also confirms the naming of this year’s lineup, iPhone 14 (6.1-inch), iPhone 14 Max (6.7-inch), iPhone 14 Pro (6.1-inch), and iPhone 14 Pro Max (6.7-inch)

Ian’s Take: It seems like more than ever Apple is trying to differentiate their “pro” line from their “consumer” line. Last year Apple gave the iPhone 13 Pro series one more GPU core, and now they are giving the iPhone 14 Pro an exclusive processor.
