Apple Watch Series 7 may have redesigned body, health upgrades

The rumor: Apple is planning some big upgrades for the Apple Watch Series 7, according to Ming-Chi Kuo (78% accurate).

    • The body of the watch is said to see an “improved form factor design,” although no other details are currently known
    • Per usual, Kuo says to expect upgrades to health management features
    • The last time the Apple Watch saw a significant design change was in 2018 with the Series 4

Our take: Curious to see what direction the Apple Watch will go, design-wise. Maybe sharper edges like iPhone 12?

Unreleased Apple Watch bands for the 2020 Olympics shown in new photos

The news: Apple was seemingly preparing to release a slew of new Apple Watch bands in anticipation of the 2020 Olympics, as shared by L0vetodream (88.7% accurate).

    • Both the Denmark and Japan bands leaked…coincidentally featuring inverted color schemes representative of each country’s flag
    • Apple previously created exclusive bands for the 2016 Olympics in Rio

Our take: With all the hype that the Olympics bring, I’m sure these would’ve been a hit. They look like new colorways for the Sport Loop—which I’ve never tired—but always look real comfortable.

Apple Watch Series 6 is thinner, has larger battery & more

The news: The Apple Watch Series 6 is a very different watch than the Series 5, at least internally, according to a teardown by iFixit.

    • The battery received a “3.5% increase for the 44mm battery, and an even bigger 8.5% increase for the 40mm”
    • Force Touch has been removed, contributing the the Series 6 being 3.16% thinner
    • A larger Taptic Engine is present inside the new watches, too

Our take: It’s always fascinating to learn what really changed on the inside of some new products. Super cool to see that there is a physically larger battery on the inside!

  • Apple Watch ‘SE’ to include S5 processor

Apple Watch ‘SE’ to include S5 processor

The leak: The new lower-cost Apple Watch rumored to be debut later this week will include a quick processor inside, according to Kang (95% accurate).

    • The speedy S5 processor will be present, which suggests this could include a built-in compass, like on the Series 5
    • An altimeter, initially introduced on the Apple Watch Series 3, will also remain on this lower-cost wearable

Our take: This source, Kang, nailed a ton of leaks for watchOS 7 and the iPhone SE earlier in 2020. Initially you may be surprised that Apple plans to put the barely year-old Series 5 processor in this low-cost watch. Then again, the S5 processor is identical to the 2018 S4…the only difference being a built-in magnetometer.

Apple Watch Series 6 to support fast charging, come in new colorway

The leak: The Apple Watch Series 6 is set to be a much more significant upgrade than last year, according to Kang (95% accurate).

The included feature-set leaked on Weibo earlier.

    • Blood oxygen sensor
    • Altimeter
    • Improved performance
    • Same battery life
    • New color
    • New band material
    • Apple S6 chip
    • Fast charging

Our take: This Weibo source nailed a ton of leaks for the iPhone SE and macOS Big Sur earlier this year. Plus, this pretty much lines up with everything we’ve been hearing about the new watch.

  • Apple Watch ‘SE’ coming next week with Series 4 design

Apple Watch ‘SE’ coming next week with Series 4 design

The rumor: A new, lower-cost Apple Watch with the design of the Series 4 is coming next week at Apple’s September 15 event, according to Jon Prosser (67.6% accurate).

    • The Series 4-designed Watch will come in 40 and 44mm sizes
    • But some major features from the Series 5 will be missing: both ECG and the always-on display won’t be present
    • An M9 chip will be inside

Our take: To me, these specs sound pretty much spot-on. It’s a solid balance between not as new as the Series 5 but not too old like the Series 3.

  • Apple confirms ‘Apple Watch Series 6’ name and announcement

Apple confirms ‘Apple Watch Series 6’ name and announcement

The news: Ahead of their September 15 event, Apple has confirmed some of what will be announced, as spotted by Gui Rambo.

    • ‘Apple Watch Series 6’ is confirmed to be the name of this year’s flagship wearable
    • Thus, an announcement at the event early next week has also been solidified
    • The information was accidentally leaked in the metadata for Apple’s upcoming livestream, which AppleTrack has verified

Our take: Oops. If you weren’t convinced already, the Apple Watch Series 6 will be the big announcement at Apple’s event next week.

  • Many Apple Watch Series 5 models are out of stock at Apple & Verizon

Many Apple Watch Series 5 models are out of stock at Apple & Verizon

The news: Ahead of some announcement on apple.com tomorrow, Apple Watch Series 5 models are out of stock at Apple and Verizon.

    • Jon Prosser (77.8% accurate) believes a new Apple Watch will be announced tomorrow morning
    • 3 of the 4 Apple Watch Series 5 models are currently out of stock on apple.com
    • Verizon is also seeing shortages on their online store, per Jon Prosser

Our take: All of this is pretty convincing at this point. It’s the night before Apple is announcing something in less than 24 hours and this is adding fuel to the fire. All I’m saying is this: I’ve seen similar scenarios play out in the past…due to coincidence..and stock shortages have been just that. A shortage on stock for some particular product.

  • Apple Watch ‘SE’ may lack ECG feature

Apple Watch ‘SE’ may lack ECG feature

The rumor: The upcoming, l0wer-end Apple Watch may be a modified version of the existing Series 5, according to L0vetodream (89.2% accurate).

    • The lower-end Apple Watch could be a Series 5 model, but without the ECG feature
      • Presumably, Apple would leave out other features, too
    • Mark Gurman (86.7% accurate) recently rumored the Fall release of a cheaper Apple Watch to replace the current Series 3 model

Our take: L0vetodream’s crazy-good track record is going to lead me to believe this…although I do find it a bit strange that this “lower-end Apple Watch” is more or less as good as last year’s flagship model. To me, offering the Apple Watch Series 4 without ECG would be more realistic.

  • New Apple product(s) likely coming on September 8

New Apple product(s) likely coming on September 8

The news: After previewing that something was happening on September 8, Jon Prosser (77.8% accurate) has confirmed that a new Apple product or two is coming later this week.

    • The new product(s) are said to be coming this Tuesday at 6am PST
    • Prosser previously said that new iPad and Apple Watch models were coming this month
    • L0vetodream (89.2% accurate) however, doesn’t think a new Apple Watch is coming in September

Our take: I’m far more confident in a new iPad Air launching on Tuesday than a new Apple Watch. A pair of recent reports have said the Apple Watch Series 6 isn’t coming out this month after all, so temper your expectations for this week’s press release accordingly! Will be an exciting week nonetheless.
