iPhone 12 may come in new orange and blue colors

The rumor: Apple is bringing at least two new colors to the standard iPhone 12 models, according to Max Weinbach (57.8% accurate).

    • The possible new colors (of which 3 are possible but only 2 may make the cut) include:
      • Light blue
      • Light orange
      • An updated version of violet (purple)
    • These are said to come in addition to a new dark blue color on the Pro models

Our take: Examining the invitation, there’s been a lot of speculation about what the orange component of the styling could mean. Maybe this is it.

Apple announces October 13 event, iPhone 12 inbound

The news: Apple just announced a new Special Event taking place next week on October 13.

    • The event kicks off on apple.com at 10am PST
    • iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and AirTags are expected to headline the event on October 13

Our take: A couple things. First, those circles on the invite are really interesting. Seems like it is heavily implying that AirTags will be unveiled at the event. 2: the tagline ‘Hi, Speed’ is clearly referring to the A14 processor and 5G connectivity. Going to be a packed event.

  • iPhone 12 event announcement may happen as soon as tomorrow

iPhone 12 event announcement may happen as soon as tomorrow

The rumor: Apple is planning to send ‘invites’ out for a Special Event in October as soon as tomorrow, according to Jon Prosser (72.7% accurate).

    • Prior to Apple’s September 15 event, invites were sent out 7 days in advance on September 8
    • The October event, where iPhone 12 and AirTags will be unveiled, is said to take place on Tuesday, October 13

Our take: October 13 has been pretty unanimously agreed upon by a number of sources in the community. Based on what happened in September, tomorrow seems highly likely for an event announcement to me.

  • iOS 14.2 confirms iPhone 12 won’t ship with included headphones

iOS 14.2 confirms iPhone 12 won’t ship with included headphones

The news: A small change to some wording in iOS 14.2 reveals Apple’s plans to remove EarPods from the box this year, as spotted by MacRumors (69% accurate).

    • The wording change can be found when looking at copy for reducing RF exposure while using your iPhone
    • In previous version of iOS, the words “the supplied headphones” were present
      • The updated text now just says “headphones”
    • Ming-Chi Kuo (74.6% accurate) and others previously predicted no headphones in the box this year
Top is iOS 14.0.1 and prior, bottom is iOS 14.2 (image courtesy of MacRumors)

Our take: While this is bad news, I still think losing the power brick has far worse implications. You can easily make the argument that most people buying an iPhone already have some pair of headphones at home. But the amount of people with extra power bricks available, on demand…I think it’s shockingly less.

  • iPhone 12 Pro lineup to start at 128GB storage

iPhone 12 Pro lineup to start at 128GB storage

The leak: The iPhone 12 Pro lineup will ship with the highest base storage ever in an iPhone, according to Jon Prosser (72.7% accurate).

    • 128GB may be the base variant for Pro models of the iPhone 12 this year
    • iPhone 12 and 12 mini could start at 64GB, with the option to go up to 256GB

Our take: 128GB as the starting capacity in the Pro series is just so great. It’s a small upgrade, but something that many power users will love. 64GB on the lower-end lineup is fine.

  • First look at Apple’s upcoming black, braided Lightning to USB-C cable

First look at Apple’s upcoming black, braided Lightning to USB-C cable

The leak: A new photo has just surfaced that shows an unreleased braided, black Lightning to USB-C cable, as shared by JinStore.

    • The new cable is rumored to ship with the iMac Pro and Mac Pro
    • We’ve previously seen images leak of the same cable in white

Our take: This looks slick…and should definitely be a lot more resistant than the more fragile cables that currently ship with iPhones. Still, I’m not sure this will do the trick to make up for the lack of headphones and a charger.

Official iPhone 12 cases confirm new ‘mini’ naming

The leak: A leaked photo of official iPhone cases reveals the naming for Apple’s 2020 lineup, courtesy of DuanRui.

    • Stickers on the new cases reveal the following:
      • iPhone 12 mini
      • iPhone 12 / 12 Pro
      • iPhone 12 Pro Max

Our take: This looks legitimate to me, and it aligns precisely with what L0vetodream (88.7% accurate) shared earlier this month. mini, in all lowercase, will be the name of Apple’s 5.4-inch iPhone 12.

  • 5.4-inch model to be named ‘iPhone 12 mini’

5.4-inch model to be named ‘iPhone 12 mini’

The leak: Apple’s naming for this year’s iPhone lineup will include a different moniker for the first time ever on the lineup, according to L0vetodream (88.7% accurate).

Here’s what the highly-accurate leaker thinks the naming will be:

    • 5.4-inch model: iPhone 12 mini
    • 6.1-inch model: iPhone 12
    • 6.1-inch model: iPhone 12 Pro
    • 6.7-inch model: iPhone 12 Pro Max

Our take: Apple has never used ‘mini’ to describe an iPhone before. Where have we seen it? On the iPod, iPad and on the Mac. This seems like the perfect way to market it as it is the smallest higher-end iPhone in years.

  • 120Hz display cut from iPhone 12 Pro

120Hz display cut from iPhone 12 Pro

The rumor: After months of back-and-forth on whether or not we would see 120Hz display technology on iPhone 12 Pro, it hasn’t made the cut…according to Jon Prosser (67.6% accurate).

    • Apple wasn’t able to able to get 120Hz displays working on their high-end lineup this year
    • Other sources think 120Hz will come to iPhone in 2021
    • Mass production for the iPhone 12 is now in full swing, ahead of an October launch for some models

Our take: It’s official: 120Hz isn’t coming this year. I’m bummed. But more so, I’m genuinely curious at this point what the big sell of the higher-end iPhones will be.

  • Hands-on video of iPhone 12 chassis leaked

Hands-on video of iPhone 12 chassis leaked

The leak: Ahead of release sometime next month, we have our clearest look yet at what the final design for the iPhone 12 may be, according to EverythingApplePro.

    https://twitter.com/EveryApplePro/status/1304529976486776833?s=20
    • The casing shown in the video is apparently a 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro
    • A LiDAR sensor is sitting below the same triple camera layout as last year
    • There’s also what looks to be a magnetic cutout inside the phone and a new 5G antenna area on the side

Our take: EverythingApplePro says that this is a legitimate chassis. At first it looked off to me, but then I found some older photos of other iPhone chassis. They’re pretty comparable in the sense that they are both rough around the edges and don’t look as close to the end product as you would think.
