Apple Watch Series 7 may include new double-sided S7 chip

The rumor: Apple is working on a radical upgrade to the chip design in Apple Watch Series 7, according to DigiTimes (63.5% accurate, via MacRumors.)

    • Taiwanese supplier ASE Technology has developed double-sided System in Package (SiP) technology that allows for a smaller chip design
    • Apple Watch Series 7 is rumored to be redesigned and include new health features

Our take: This absolutely sounds like it could lead to a larger battery in a watch that is tremendously size constrained already. In all of Apple’s products, every millimeter counts…but especially in smaller ones like AirPods or Apple Watch.

  • New 14/16-inch MacBook Pro models potentially delayed until 2022

New 14/16-inch MacBook Pro models potentially delayed until 2022

    • Apple’s next MacBooks with Mini-LED displays may have been delayed until 2022
    • No further detail is currently available from the DigiTimes paywalled-preview

Our take: For anyone waiting to buy a new 14 or 16-inch MacBook Pro, this isn’t great news. That being said, DigiTimes is the only outlet currently reporting the delay and is less than 65% accurate, so there is s still a chance we see the Mini-LED MacBooks this year.

    • The latest report says that AirPods 3 are currently being mass produced, which always happens close to a product’s launch
    • Today’s information corroborates a prior report from Ming-Chi Kuo (76.6% accurate) for a Q3 2021 release timeframe

Our take: While it seemed like AirPods 3 were coming in just weeks, these two latest reports have provided a different narrative.

  • New iPad Pro may not ship until April at the earliest

New iPad Pro may not ship until April at the earliest

The rumor: Apple’s iPad Pro will not be launching in March after all, according to DigiTimes (65.1% accurate).

    • The new report suggests “volume shipments” won’t start until the second quarter of 2021 (April-June) at the earliest, a significant delay from the late March timeframe they reported last week
    • Apple’s next iPad Pro is said to be equipped with a chip as fast as M1, and feature 5G connectivity alongside an all-new Mini-LED display

Our take: DigiTimes flip-flopping on the release of this iPad Pro in just under a week lends credence to the fact that something at Apple changed last minute. We have no idea why, but it doesn’t appear that we are getting this new iPad Pro in March, after all.

  • 2021 iPad Pro slated to launch as soon as late March

2021 iPad Pro slated to launch as soon as late March

The rumor: Apple’s next iPad Pro is just around the corner, according to DigiTimes (65.1% accurate, via MacRumors).

Our take: This lines up with what other sources have been reporting as well. There’s not way we don’t see a new iPad Pro this month.

AirPods Pro 2 again rumored to launch within next 5 months

The rumor: The second-generation version of AirPods Pro 2 is less than half a year away, according to DigiTimes (65.1% accurate).

    • AirPods Pro 2 are expected to “launch later in the first half of this year,” suggesting a release in the April/May timeframe that has been previously rumored
    • Next-generation AriPods pro may feature a radical new design like Amazon’s Echo Buds

Our take: While I initially expected AirPods Pro 2 to come in the second half of 2021, it seems they are launching a bit sooner: my bet is in May. Looking forward to seeing what Apple has done with the design, which could be a significant departure from what we know.

  • Sensor-shift stabilization may come to all iPhone 13 models

Sensor-shift stabilization may come to all iPhone 13 models

The rumor: Apple may be expanding one of the most impressive features on iPhone 12 Pro Max to more models in 2021, according to DigiTimes (65.1% accurate).

    • Sensor-shift stabilization works to minimize shakiness by steading the entire camera sensor, not just the lens
    • DigiTimes says that sensor-shift stabilization will come to all iPhone 13 models in 2021

Our take: Sensor-shift stabilization is, by far, the most impressive camera upgrades in years. Video has been the best on iPhone for as long as I can remember, and this will keep things competitive.

  • All iPhone 13 models may get LiDAR scanner

All iPhone 13 models may get LiDAR scanner

The rumor: Apple plans to expand LiDAR to more iPhones this year, according to DigiTimes (65.1% accurate).

    • LiDAR is primarily useful in AR scenarios, but also helps with low-light autofocus and portrait mode photos

Our take: As Apple prepares to launch AR glasses as soon as 2022, a solid ecosystem of AR hardware will be required: LiDAR on all iPhones is a step forward there. Odd that this Pro-positioned feature could go on all models so soon, though.

  • ‘Dark blue’ iPhone 12 model again rumored for release this year

‘Dark blue’ iPhone 12 model again rumored for release this year

The news: Following last year’s release of Midnight Green, Apple is preparing a new color for some of its iPhone models this year, according to DigiTimes (61% accurate).

    • The new ‘dark blue’ colorway will be a first for an Apple product
    • It’s still unclear whether or not Midnight Green will be eliminated
    • Max Weinbach (39.% accurate) shared the new color was coming months ago

Our take: With multiple sources now reporting the same thing, it seems like ‘dark blue’ is happening this year. That being said, I hope it is complimentary to Midnight Green…not its replacement.

  • 6.1-inch iPhone 12 models could debut ahead of others

6.1-inch iPhone 12 models could debut ahead of others

The rumor: Apple will debut both 6.1-inch iPhone 12 models ahead of the 5.4 and 6.7-inch variants as part of a two-wave release, according to DigiTimes (61% accurate).

    • iPhone 12 Max (6.1-inch) and iPhone 12 Pro (6.1-inch) could release prior to the iPhone 12 (5.4-inch) and iPhone 12 Pro Max (6.7-inch)
    • Apple confirmed the new iPhones will be shipping later than usual this year

Our take: It would be a bit odd for Apple to launch one Pro and one non-Pro iPhone from each tier at the same time, and then follow-up a bit later with the release of the smallest and largest models. That being said, it’s an interesting idea for sure: I’m just not sold on it.
